Smearman sparks Altoona to victory

LEWISBERRY — Aaron Smearman’s RBI single in the top of the seventh broke a 4-4 tie Saturday afternoon as the Altoona baseball team went on to a 9-5 win over Red Land in high school action. Starting pitcher Tanner Stroup struck out 11 in five innings of work, and hit a double and triple with one RBI. Teammate Connor Sanders added two hits and two RBIs. Central swept its way past Bishop Guilfoyle 25-18, 25-14 and 25-12 in three sets on Thursday night in boys high school volleyball play. The Hollidaysburg tandem of Ben Johnson and Garrett Bouchard secured a spot in the District 4-6 Class 3A Boys Doubles Tennis Championship. Johnson, a senior, and Bouchard, a sophomore, won three matches on Tuesday — beating teams from Williamsport, Central Mountain and Shikellamy without losing a set — and will now face top-seeded Mark Sandow and Peter Novikov in today’s noon championship at Mansion Park.
