Tigers doubles team to compete for championship

The Hollidaysburg tandem of Ben Johnson and Garrett Bouchard secured a spot in the District 4-6 Class 3A Boys Doubles Tennis Championship.

Johnson, a senior, and Bouchard, a sophomore, won three matches on Tuesday -- beating teams from Williamsport, Central Mountain and Shikellamy without losing a set -- and will now face top-seeded Mark Sandow and Peter Novikov in today's noon championship at Mansion Park.

Sandow and Novikov beat Hollidaysburg's Michael Waibel and Felix Xu in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-1.

Westmont Hilltop's Sebastian Masterson and John Allen will face teammates Easton Ragno and Brett Hoffman in the District 6 Class 2A final at Westmont Hilltop High School today.

Lions go over .500

CHAMBERSBURG -- Caleb Fries had 13 kills, three blocks and five digs to lead Altoona to a 25-15, 25-21, 25-21 sweep over Chambersburg in high school boys volleyball on Tuesday.

Sam Kessinger dished out 24 assists, two kills, two aces and three digs.

Nino Yohn had 16 digs for the Mountain Lions, who improved to 6-5.

West Shamokin swept Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic, 25-5, 27-25, 25-13, in high school boys volleybll at the Pleasant Valley Gym.

Noah Kelleher had eight service points and two aces and a team-high five digs for BG.

Brenden Young had seven assists, and Jacob Mellott had three digs.
