LEWISBERRY -- Aaron Smearman's RBI single in the top of the seventh broke a 4-4 tie Saturday afternoon as the Altoona baseball team went on to a 9-5 win over Red Land in high school action.
Starting pitcher Tanner Stroup struck out 11 in five innings of work, and hit a double and triple with one RBI. Teammate Connor Sanders added two hits and two RBIs.
Altoona, which trailed 3-0 after two innings, improved to 10-6. Red Land fell to 3-12.

Lions come up short
STATE COLLEGE -- The Altoona boys volleyball team competed in the State College Invitational over the weekend where it finished third in its pool before getting eliminated in the Silver pool division.
Altoona opened morning play splitting with Central York (18-25, 31-29) and Carlisle (25-21, 15-25). Altoona lost twice to Canon-McMillan (25-22, 28-26).
The Lions were reseeded to the Silver division where Altoona split with Latrobe (21-25, 25-23), and lost to both Pennridge (25-23, 25-21) and Meadville (25-22, 25-15).
The Mountain Lions got 29 kills and 21 digs from Caleb Fries to go with 28 digs and 15 kills from Noah Fries. Lukas Weathersbee added 15 kills and 15 digs while Tyler Kowalski contributed 10 kills and nine blocks. Sam Kessinger finished with 75 assists and 30 digs while Nino Yohn added 52 digs and Luke Mitchell nine kills.

Corso wins event
The following was mistakenly omitted from the coverage of Friday's Altoona Mountain Lion Track & Field Classic.
Altoona senior Josh Corso claimed the high jump event, clearing 6-2, and topped his closest competitors by two inches.
