Curve squander ninth-inning lead

BOWIE, Md. — Connor Scott made one of the great catches ever for the Curve to help win Saturday night, but the team got handed a crushing blow Sunday afternoon at Bowie. Altoona led by a run entering the bottom of the ninth, looking for a series split. Then the Baysox sent the Curve home hugely disappointed with a two-run, walk-off homer for a 5-4 win at Prince George’s Stadium. The loss was a bad one for the Curve’s playoff chances, as they are now 6¢ games behind co-leaders Bowie and Erie in the Southwest Division with only 18 games left to play. Had Altoona won Sunday, it ...

Bad luck for Ortiz costs Curve

BOWIE, Md. — Curve pitcher Luis Ortiz can look dominant at times, which happened again Friday night, but the right-hander with great stuff has endured some terrible luck this season. Ortiz struck out a season-high 10 Friday, and he gave up just one run through five innings. But he got tagged for two more runs in the sixth, and that wound up costing him and the Curve the game in a 4-1 loss to Bowie at Prince George’s Stadium. Ortiz, who throws upwards of 100 mph, making him a very intriguing prospect, dropped to 5-10 on the season with a 4.64 ERA. He has good enough stuff to have ...

Rain cools off Curve

There’s a good time for a rainout and a bad time for a rainout, and Sunday was the latter for the Curve, both on and off the field. Altoona has won four games in a row and was looking to make it five straight against a bad Harrisburg team. But instead, rain forced the game to be canceled at Peoples Natural Gas Field, and it will not be made up since the teams don’t play again this season. Off the field, the Sunday night contest would have drawn a big crowd, especially with postgame fireworks. The Curve ran their winning streak to four Saturday night with a 7-4 victory over ...
