BOWIE, Md. -- The Curve pretty much got pounded their last visit here, but they opened this series on a much better note Tuesday night, looking to set a good tone for the week.
Altoona scored three runs in the first inning, built a comfortable lead and then held on for a 7-5 victory over Bowie at Prince Georges Stadium.
If the Curve are to have any hope of making a push for a possible playoff berth, they need to have a big series this week.
Erie leads the Southwest Division at 30-16, while Bowie is one game back at 29-17 and the Curve are 4½ back at 25-20. So Altoona cannot afford another tough series against the Baysox, like they had last month when they dropped five of six.
Malcom Nunez hit a three-run homer in the first inning, and Endy Rodriguez ran his hitting streak to 10 with a solo homer in the third. Blake Sabol went 3-for-4, and Nunez finished with four RBIs.
Curve starter Quinn Priester (2-3) gave up five runs over 5• innings, but only one was earned. Tyler Samaniego got his 10th save.
Some more good news Tuesday, Henry Davis, last year's No. 1 draft pick, began a rehab assignment with low-A Bradenton. Davis (wrist injury) could be in position to rejoin the Curve later this week.
