BOWIE, Md. -- Curve pitcher Luis Ortiz can look dominant at times, which happened again Friday night, but the right-hander with great stuff has endured some terrible luck this season.
Ortiz struck out a season-high 10 Friday, and he gave up just one run through five innings. But he got tagged for two more runs in the sixth, and that wound up costing him and the Curve the game in a 4-1 loss to Bowie at Prince George's Stadium.
Ortiz, who throws upwards of 100 mph, making him a very intriguing prospect, dropped to 5-10 on the season with a 4.64 ERA. He has good enough stuff to have much better numbers than that, but again, has just run into some tough luck.
It's not bad luck that the Curve keep losing to Bowie. The Baysox have proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that they are superior to Altoona, winning eight of the past 10 meetings to pretty much destroy the Curve's playoff hopes. They are 6 ¢ games behind the Baysox with only 20 games to play.
Altoona had just three hits Friday, and their lone run came on a homer by Malcom Nunez in the fourth.
