WISE Women offers $10K in scholarships

WISE Women of Blair County is seeking applications for scholarship assistance. One or more scholarships will be awarded up to a total of $10,000.

WISE Women (WISE stands for Women Involved in Scholarship and Empowerment) has granted $20,000 in scholarships each year for women to continue their education. The mission of the organization is to empower women and to eliminate racism through collaboration, service and education.

The mission is fulfilled by providing scholarships, awarding grants and recognizing outstanding women in the community through the annual Tribute dinner. These scholarships are awarded through the Central Pennsylvania Community Foundation. To receive an application packet, visit www.wisewomenofblaircounty.org. The deadline for applications is 4 p.m. March 26.

Completed applications must be received by U.S. mail to WISE Women, P.O. Box 134, Hollidaysburg, PA 16648 or by emailing info@wisewomenofblaircounty.org.

Scholarships will be available to Blair County resident females 21 years of age or older who have overcome adversity or discrimination in their lives and who are pursuing post-secondary education.

The scholarship is not available for a master’s, doctorate or a second bachelor’s degree.

Zumba event, food drive set for Feb. 17

Fit N Fun House will host its annual charity event, “Shake Our Canz & Goodz For Canned Goodz #9,” to benefit the St. Vincent DePaul Society at 6 p.m. Feb. 17 at Fit N Fun House,

3000 Seventh Ave., second floor, rear, Altoona.

This year, participants will be shaking their “canZ” to a Pitbull-inspired playlist for 90 minutes of Zumba Fitness Fun for a great cause… helping feed those in need!

Organizers are asking for donations of $10 worth of canned goods/non-perishable items or monetary — any donation amount will be appreciated.

All are welcome to participate, or at least donate.

Organizers will be collecting canned goods up until the time of the event.

Wear your red, pink, hearts, etc., for a ValentineZ Day-themed event.

Williamsburg sets kindergarten registration

WILLIAMSBURG — The Williamsburg Community School District will conduct its annual kindergarten registration on March 12. Any child residing in the district who will be 5 years old on or before June 30, 2021, is eligible to enroll.

Registration is by appointment only. Appointments may be scheduled by calling the elementary school office at 832-2125. Registration packets are available for pick-up in the elementary office.

A state birth certificate (original), Social Security card, current immunization record and proof of residency are required for admission to school and need to be presented with the completed registration documentation by Feb. 26.

Alto Model Train museum plans open house

The Alto Model Train Museum Association will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 20 and 21 and March 20 and 21 at 1117 Ninth Ave., Altoona, across the street from Altoona Pipe and Steel.

The open house will continue on the third full weekend of each month.

Now on display is a collection of railroad art by local artist Robert Hunt.

Because of COVID-19 concern, the children’s play area will not be available. There is no admission charge, although donations are accepted.

WISE Women Tribute dinner rescheduled

The board of directors of WISE Women of Blair County has postponed its annual Tribute to Women dinner due to the coronavirus and the uncertainty of the time line for vaccines.

The dinner will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 20 at The Casino at Lakemont Park.

WISE Women will honor women that were chosen for the 2020 Tribute Dinner.

Chocolate Walk tickets on sale online

BEDFORD — The fourth annual Downtown Bedford Inc. Chocolate Walk will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, Feb. 20 and 27 and March 6 and 13.

Visit participating locations and you will receive a chocolate-themed giveaway or experience. A Golden Ticket is hidden in one of the giveaways. The lucky winner will win a half pound of chocolate per month from Bedford Candies from April through December 2021.

Cost is $20 and tickets must be purchased in advance online at eventbrite.com. In order to adhere to social distancing protocol, only 100 tickets will be available for each of the four weekends. There will be two check-in locations: Founders Crossing Marketplace and Fat Jimmy’s Outfitters. Tickets are only available online and are non-refundable, unless the event is canceled.

Penn Cambria sets kindergarten registration

CRESSON — The Penn Cambria Pre-Primary School (located next to the high school) is accepting calls to register for kindergarten for the 2021-22 school year.

Please contact 886-8166, ext. 1104, for a packet to be mailed to you to be completed and returned.

A child must be 5 years old by Aug. 31, 2021, to register for kindergarten for the 2021-22 school year.

Altoona Food Bank open in new location

The Altoona Food Bank is now open and operating from its new location at 2318 N. Branch Ave., Altoona.

The new telephone number is 944-4013. The hours of operation are still 9:15 a.m. to noon Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Entrance can be made by the single door on the side. Masks are mandatory. Customers need to have their ID. New and existing clients are welcome.
