Surviving are his wife, Dottie; and their children, Mary Plummer (Jason) of Blue Knob and Amy Slagenweit (Chad) of Claysburg; as well as his other children, Brett Dively and Marcee McDermott, both of Lilly. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Luke Slagenweit, Daniel McDermott, Katie Plummer, Jackson Slagenweit and Sophie Slagenweit, each of whom brought endless pride and happiness to his life. John was a 1964 graduate of Greenfield-Kimmel High School and attended Williamsport Area Community College. In his younger days, he was an avid drag racer, well known in the racing community as “Hawkeye Dively,” and he once ran the Peterson Dragway in Tyrone. His love of racing led him to start his own business, Econo-Trailer, which proudly still remains in operation after 50 years.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening and wearing Hawaiian shirts. He never passed up a good buffet. He enjoyed numerous fishing trips to Canada and Raystown Lake, whether it was with family or his employees, who were like family to him.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday May 13, 2026, at Harry E. Miller Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 810 Bedford St., Claysburg. In celebration of John’s life and his love of Hawaiian shirts, the family asks those attending, if possible, to wear a Hawaiian shirt in his honor. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Smokey Run Rod and Gun Club or the Claysburg-Kimmel Fishing Club.
