Military Food Share set for May 11
Military Food Share at the Duncansville VFW 8724 will be held on Monday, May 11, beginning at 11 a.m.
This is for all active military, veterans and widows or widowers of veterans living in Blair County. A military ID, DD214 or VA card and photo ID are required. Please enter from Dunnings Highway/Newry Lane and line up on Turek Drive. Food shares are held on the second Monday of each month.
Blair Garden Club to hold plant sale
Blair Garden Club will hold a plant sale wfrom 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, May 15, on the grounds of the Jaggard Untied Methodist Church, 1801 Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona. There will be no Saturday morning sale.
Funds from this sale support the club’s scholarship program and grant initiative.
There will be a variety of perennials for both sun and shade, annuals, including vegetable and herb plants and houseplants.
There will also be a selection of Pennsylvania native plants grown by one of the club’s members. The club will also have decorative containers and garden ornaments for sale. Club members will be available to offer advice on plants and how to grow them.
Rabies clinic planned May 17 in Patton
The Patton Fire Company No. 1 will hold a rabies clinic and dog/cat grooming (ears/nails) event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, May 17, at the fire hall at 410 Magee Ave., Patton.
Payment can be cash only. Dogs/cats must be on a leash or in a carrier. Dogs must be at least 12 weeks old to receive a rabies shot. Rabies shots are $15, distemper/parvo is $20, and grooming is $10. Proceeds benefit the fire company.
‘Fill the Truck’ to benefit veterans
The Blair-Bedford Builders Association, in partnership with Stuckey Ford of Hollidaysburg, launched a “Fill the Truck” donation drive through June 17 to benefit residents of the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home.
Drop-off locations are available throughout the region.
A special collection will take place during BBBA’s Business After Hours event on May 12 at Stuckey Ford of Hollidaysburg.
The campaign will culminate at the association’s 30th annual golf tournament, presented by Breezeline, on June 18 at Iron Masters Country Club, Roaring Spring. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home and BBBA’s educational initiatives.
Tax-deductible financial contributions can be made directly through the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. Checks made payable to “HVH Residents’ Welfare Fund” can be mailed to the BBBA office.

Historical society to meet in Duncansville
The Duncansville Area Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, at the Duncansville Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1200 Fourth Ave. Enter by door “D” at the rear of the church.
Jim Snyder, president of the Blair County Genealogical Society, will discuss the Fountain Inn, which was located between Cresson and Duncansville.
The society is encouraging more local people to attend the meetings. It is interested in copies of pictures and information regarding Duncansville. Information can be sent to Nancy DeLozier, P.O. Box 115, Duncansville, PA 16635. The society meets on the second Tuesday of every other month, except January.
Morrisons Cove Class of 1960 to meet
The Morrisons Cove High School Class of 1960 will meet at noon Wednesday, May 13, at The Bistro at The Village at Martinsburg.
Friends and spouses are welcome.
PASR to meet Wednesday at US Hotel
The Blair County Chapter of Pennsylvania School Retirees will meet Wednesday, May 13, at the US Hotel in Hollidaysburg. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m.
Donations will be accepted for the Blair County scholarships that the group awards each year. New friends are welcome.
Martinsburg library to hold book sale
The Friends of the Martinsburg Community Library will hold a used book sale from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 21, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Friday, May 22, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 23, outside in Pavillion 2 at Morrisons Cove Memorial Park, Martinsburg. A $5-a-bag day will be held Saturday.
The Friends of the Library will be able to purchase books from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Customers can purchase a Friends membership at that time for $10.
Donations of gently used books, audiobooks, DVDs, puzzles and games will be accepted from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, and Wednesday, May 20, at Pavilion 2. Do not drop items off. VCR tapes, books in poor condition, textbooks, Readers’ Digest Condensed books, and magazines will not be accepted.
DAR hears about Wreaths Across America
The Adam Holliday Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution met April 11 at the Hollidaysburg Area Public Library Community Room.
Samantha Snowberger spoke about Wreaths Across America’s mission. National Wreaths Across America Day will be held on Saturday, Dec. 19. Volunteers and supporters will gather at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Martinsburg.
The chapter welcomed Amelia Morning and Marie Little as members. Any woman at least 18 years of age who can prove lineal descent to a patriot who served in the Revolutionary War or gave aid to American Colonists is eligible for DAR membership.
