Plane hits, kills person during takeoff

The National Transportation Safety Board says it is gathering information about the evacuation of a Frontier Airlines plane after it hit a person on the runway at Denver International Airport during takeoff.

The Frontier Airlines flight from Denver to Los Angeles reported the incident late Friday night. Frontier Airlines stated that smoke was reported in the cabin, leading pilots to abort takeoff. Passengers were evacuated via slides and taken to the terminal.

Iran war hangs over Trump’s China trip

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s trip to China may not come with the same fanfare that accompanied his first-term visit. In 2017, China went all out to welcome the new American president.

For this week’s talks between Trump and China’s Xi Jinping, the Iran war is raising the stakes for both sides. For one, China is the biggest buyer of Iran’s oil. Trump, meanwhile, had hoped China would do more to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Teen’s remains not found in search

ARROYO GRANDE — Authorities in California say they have not found the remains of Kristin Smart after finishing their search of a home tied to the man convicted of killing her.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office says it completed a search of Susan Flores’ property. Her son, Paul Flores, was convicted in 2022 of killing the 19-year-old college student who went missing in 1996.

Remains of US soldier recovered

CASABLANCA — The remains of a U.S. soldier missing during military exercises in Morocco have been recovered in the Atlantic Ocean.

The army announced Sunday that 1st Lt. Kendrick Lamont Key Jr., a 27-year-old Air Defense Artillery officer, was found by a Moroccan military search team. Key was one of two soldiers who fell off a cliff during a recreational hike.

Death toll rises to 14 in suicide attack

PESHAWAR — Authorities say the death toll from a suicide attack on a security post in northwest Pakistan has risen to 14 police officers. A self-proclaimed breakaway group of the Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility.

The attack occurred late Saturday when a suicide bomber and gunmen detonated an explosives-laden vehicle near the post in Bannu, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
