H.S. digest

STATE COLLEGE — The Hollidaysburg high school boys tennis team entered the District 6 Class 3A team tennis championship unbeaten as the second seed on Thursday.

The Golden Tigers opponent was top-seeded State College who had just one loss on its resume.

“To be right there competing with a school the size of State College every year is a testament to how much time and effort our players have put in to get to such a high level of tennis,” Hollidaysburg coach Brian Denis said.

Hollidaysburg dropped its first match of the year in a 4-0 title match loss to the Little Lions.

“I am extremely proud of the boys today, and our entire program for another outstanding year,” Denis said. “These kids are very involved in so many activities, and they are great students, and we are proud of how well-rounded they are.”

The No. 2 singles match between the Tigers’ Felix Xu and State High’s Eric Liu was suspended in the second set with the score being 1-1. Eric Liu had claimed the first set by a 6-4 score.

William Liu won at No. 1 singles and Frank Hsu took No. 3 singles for State College.

The doubles teams of Jude Cessna and Evan Zhang, and Henry Poole and Dash Nealon also came out on top for the Little Lions.

Hollidaysburg finished the season with a 17-1 record, while State College advances into the PIAA state playoffs with a 15-1 mark.

“It’s just such a tough battle going up against such a deep team with players who only play tennis year-round from a very young age,” Denis said. “We still have the state doubles tournament to look forward to, but we are really going to miss the seniors that had an unbelievable four-year run.”
