EBENSBURG — Central Cambria athletic director, cross country and girls track and field coach Randy Wilson has been selected for induction into the Robert “Tick” Cloherty Western Chapter Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
Wilson’s induction will take place Saturday, April 27, at 6 p.m. at the Sheraton Hotel in Pittsburgh’s Station Square.
“Because of Mr. Wilson’s tireless efforts and his enthusiasm, Central Cambria is a ‘cross country school.’ At Central Cambria, athletes from other sports want to be on the cross country team,” Central Cambria principal Chris Santini said. “Coach Wilson takes any student interested in running and turns them into cross country athletes, rather than cherry picking only those who show the most potential. With all of the success Coach Wilson has had, it would be easy to rest on his laurels and pat himself on the back. The opposite is what actually happens. Randy is constantly looking for new training methods and strategies to stay ahead of the competition and put his student-athletes in the best position for success.”
Wilson’s coaching record includes a better than 98 percent winning percentage in girls cross country dual meets over his 23 year coaching career in addition to a combined 34 LHAC titles, 34 District 6 titles and six PIAA championships.
“It is with great pride that our community celebrates Mr. Wilson’s selection into the Western Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame,” Central Cambria school board president Thomas Woods said. “Mr. Wilson will now co-inhabit the upper echelon of athletic achievement with the likes of fellow Hall of Famers Dan Marino, Roberto Clemente, Art Rooney Jr. and Maurice Stokes.”
Wilson is also a school counselor at Central Cambria.
“What Randy means to this school district transcends athletics,” Central Cambria superintendent Jason Moore said. “Certainly, he’s a great school counselor, and kids trust him when coming to him with problems, but it’s the modeling of his passion and work ethic that makes Coach Wilson absolutely indispensable. Randy will tell you that he has no secret formula for success. His student athletes simply out-work everyone else. They buy into the culture of excellence. They run in poor weather. They run when other teams would have long thrown in the towel, and Randy is right there running with his team. If that isn’t the most valuable life lesson, I don’t know what is.”
