EBENSBURG — Central Cambria claimed the District 6 Class 2A girls team tennis championship with a 5-0 win over Westmont Hilltop on Wednesday.
It was Central Cambria’s first title since the 2019 season.
“I definitely thought it was attainable this year,” said Central Cambria coach Kim Cavalier, who recently won her 100th match. “What we had this year, as opposed to the last couple of years, was depth. All of them are great players.”
Marley Ratchford, Ella Persio and Riley Baxter won in singles play, and the doubles teams of Jessica Lian and Lydia Paskowski, and Emma Dumm and Allie Morgan also prevailed.
“The girls only dropped nine games in the whole match,” Cavalier said. “The played spot-on today.”
Central Cambria advances to the PIAA team tournament beginning Tuesday Oct. 25.

Tigers tumble
STATE COLLEGE — State College won the District 4-6 Class 3A Team Tennis Tournament championship, 3-0, over Hollidaysburg, but the final score didn’t indicate how close the match was.
Hollidaysburg led both singles matches that hadn’t completed and lost two matches in three setters and a doubles match, 7-6, 7-5.
“What an incredible high school tennis match,” Hollidaysburg coach Brian Denis said. “You couldn’t look away for one second or you would miss something. The girls showed so much fight and kept battling back and put us in a position where the last three matches could’ve gone either way and hinged on a single point.
Two-time District 4-6 3A singles champ Quiana Guo of State College edged Gretta Rhodes at No. 1 singles, 1-6, 6-2, 7-5, and Megan Ferris and Rachel Gallagher led their singles matches in the third set.
“Seniors Gretta Rhodes and Rachel Gallagher played the best matches of their careers and will leave an outstanding legacy,” Denis said. “We had an outstanding season with only two losses to teams with a combined 34-0 record, two of the better teams in the state.
“We have a great nucleus coming back and some talented players coming in next year, so hopefully we dedicate ourselves in the offseason to get back to this position and come out on top next year.”
State College advances to the PIAA first round on Tuesday, Oct. 25.
