Lady Lions score 4 points in 2nd quarter in loss

UNIVERSITY PARK — The Penn State women’s basketball saw its record fall to 6-3 on the season Tuesday night, losing to an undefeated Arizona State squad, 74-60, in women’s collegiate basketball action inside the Jordan Center.
The Lady Sun Devils, who trailed 18-13 after one quarter, improved to 11-0.
Arizona State pulled away in the second quarter by outscoring the hosts, 20-4, for a 33-22 halftime lead. Penn State gave up 26 points in the third quarter, falling behind 59-38 going into the final frame.
Turnovers plagued both teams in the contest, combining for a game total of 66. A trio of Lady Lions reached the double figure scoring mark including Gracie Merkle and Kiyomi McMiller who each produced double-digit scoring for the eighth consecutive game with 17 and 12 points, respectively.
Shayla Smith recorded her most points of the campaign with 12 on five-of-six shooting from the field including two-of-two from 3-point range. She was also the only Lady Lion to not commit a turnover while compiling two rebounds and two steals. As a team, Penn State totaled 17 steals with Shaelyn Steele posting five of them, while McMiller and Tia Cliante had three each. PSU out rebounded the Sun Devils 39-35 and outscored ASU in the paint by a 32-24 margin.
Gabby Elliott led ASU with 27 points, followed by 15 points from McKinna Brackens.
The Lady Lions will now get ready for a trip down south when they take on South Carolina, the No. 3 team in the country.
