Grocery Outlet may be headed to Kmart site

National chain has 400 stores

A Cleveland real estate firm has applied to Logan Township for zoning and building permits in preparation for placing a Grocery Outlet store in part of the vacant former Kmart building on Plank Road near Logan Valley Mall.

The application from Goodman Real Estate Services Group includes the email address of an official for Rural King, an Illinois-based firm that bought the Kmart building in 2021 with the intention of establishing a Rural King farm supply and equipment store there.

The plans in the Grocery Outlet application call for occupancy of 19,000 square feet — about one-fifth of the 97,000 square foot structure.

A Detroit-based architectural firm is listed on the Grocery Outlet application as designer for the $1.1 million renovation project.

A project representative picked up a permit based on the application recently, according to Logan Township Planning Director Cassandra Schmick — indicating that the project could start soon.

The Grocery Outlet portion would be on the right hand side of the building for someone facing the building from the road, according to Schmick.

The Mirror was unable to get comment from the individual listed as the real estate company contact, the individual whose Rural King email address was on the application or the architect listed on the application.

Founded in 1946, Grocery Outlet has 400 stores nationwide, obtaining brand name products at a discount due to overruns, surplus inventory or packaging changes, then passing on a portion of those discounts to consumers, according to the company’s website.

The company bills itself as “the nation’s largest extreme value retailer.”

Local families own and operate the stores, according to the company website.
