Clean-up day set at Rose Hill Cemetery
Volunteers and the Friends of Rose Hill Cemetery will hold a clean-up day at the cemetery, 501 Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona, beginning at 9 a.m. July 31.
This is a rain or shine event. Lunch and drinks will be provided.

Train museum announces new hours
The Alto Model Train Museum, 117 Ninth Ave., Altoona, has announced its new hours of operation.
It will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday until Oct. 31.
Admission is free, but donations are welcome.
Private tours are available by calling 814-942-2676 to make arrangements.
Blair Garden Club awards scholarship
The Blair Garden Club of Altoona offered a $1,000 scholarship to eligible high school students.
Nicole Himes was selected as the recipient of this year’s scholarship.
She will be majoring in environmental engineering at Saint Francis University, Loretto.
Nicole received a certificate at the Blair Garden Club meeting held on June 28.
Bedford Historical Society sets banquet
BEDFORD — The Bedford County Historical Society announced the “Historian of the Years” award for 2019 and 2020.
The 2019 winners, David and Amy Snyder, will be recognized for their renovation of the Loy Mansion and research on the history of the village of Loysburg as it relates to the patriarch Martin Loy.
The 2020 Winner, Regina Williams, will be recognized for her publications on SHS and Facebook on the townships of Southampton, Mann and Monroe and being one of the leaders to form the Southampton Township Historical Society and preservation of the Point Pleasant School.
This year’s speaker will be Robin L. Cadwallader, professor of English/communications and women’s studies at Saint Francis University.
In recognition of passage of the Suffrage Amendment, she will discuss instances of local patriarchal opposition.
They will be honored at the annual History Banquet at 6 p.m. Aug.14 at the Hall at Kinton’s Knob on the second floor of the Bedford County Historical Society, 6441 Lincoln Highway, Bedford.
Dinner will be served, and tickets are $30 each.
AHS Class of 1960 to meet Aug. 3
The Altoona High School Class of 1960 will meet at noon Aug. 3 at the Hoss’s Steak and Sea House location at Seventh Street, Altoona.
All class members are welcome. Discussion is underway for the August 2022 reunion.
The class meets on the first Tuesday of each month.
Catholic Daughters discuss next quarter
The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Our Lady of The Alleghenies Court No. 1755, held its regular monthly meeting June 9 at The Knights of Columbus Hall, Hollidaysburg.
Thirty members attended, including all of the officers. Financial secretary Anita Burket reported the current membership is 80.
The following quarter’s events were discussed: July 14, Mini meeting/awards/picnic/auction at the Knightsá Hall; Aug. 11, regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Knights’ Hall, baby shower for Precious Life; TBA, retreat from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Bemadineás Monastery; Sept. 8, birth of Mary celebration at 5 p.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, Duncansville; Sept. 11, diocesan meeting in Tyrone (Mass at 10:30 a.m.); and Sept. 15, regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Note: (third Wednesday, 64th Court Anniversary).
The blood drive held on May 11 by the Court Family Life Committee was a great success. Chair Patti Metzgar reported that 22 units of blood were collected that day.
The court picnic was held at the Knights of Columbus Hall on July 14 (the regular meeting night).
The court’s yard sale is scheduled for 7 a.m. Aug. 7 at Pat Gildea’s home at 1200 N. Juniata St., Hollidaysburg. If you would like to help, call Ginny Harrington, chairwoman, at 814-935-1820.
The club welcomed new members: Diana Walter-Dively, Anne Musser and Susan Painter.
