A flag ceremony was held on May 26 at the Inglenook Building at Presbyterian Independent Living in Hollidaysburg.
The main event was the retiring of the well-worn American flag and its replacement with a new flag that was flown over the Capital Building in Washington, D.C.
The flag was acquired and donated by residents Lloyd and Regina Forshey through the efforts of Congressman John Joyce.
Penny Rupeka, director of independent living and activities at PVH, hosted the event while resident veterans Gary Davis and Do Sylvester lowered the old flag and raised the new one. Phil Mentzer, a veteran from Duncanville, recited a poem honoring the flag. He is a member of the National Sojourners, a Masonic organization that does patriotic programs. Members of the Hollidaysburg Community Chorus, under the direction of Sandy Harteis, sang patriotic songs with audience participation.
This was the first of many scheduled activities in celebration of “America250” at PVH.
