Yesteryear-Soap Box Derby 1935

These pictures are from the 1935 Soap Box Derby in Roaring Spring, the starting point was in front of what is now the Spring Dam Brewery with the race going down Main Street. These photos are from the Elmer Burket collection which are currently being preserved at the Blair County Genealogical Society. They were submitted by Victor Curfman of Altoona, formerly of Roaring Spring.

Eagle Scouts H. Edward Soyster of Hollidaysburg and Robert Dively of Bellwood were to represent the Blair-Bedford Boy Scout Council at the 7th World Boy Scout Jamboree in Austria Aug. 3-13. About 1,000 Scouts from across the United States were to attend.

Marie M. McLaughlin, Miss Lehigh Valley, won the Miss Pennsylvania Pageant title in competition at the Jaffa Mosque in Altoona, becoming eligible to compete for the Miss America title.

The Warnaco Group Inc. which had a distribution facility in Duncansville and had once owned Puritan Sportswear in Altoona, declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Warnaco had 10 manufacturing plants and six subsidiaries, and 170 local branches nationwide.

Martin J. Marasco, president and CEO of the Altoona Blair County Development Corp. with 22 years service and 40 years in economic development, was retiring June 30 and received the Blair County Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Mirror Printing Co., parent of the Altoona Mirror newspaper, D.N. Slep president, held a banquet at the Jaffa Mosque to celebrate the paper’s 77th anniversary, being founded in June 1874. Sixty veteran employees with lengths of service from 25 to 60 years were honored.
The State Farm Insurance Co., Chalmer L. Merritts district manager, was to hold a two-day convention at the Penn Alto Hotel with an estimated 400 insurance men attending. State Farm was organized in 1922 and was one of the largest insurance companies in the world.

More than 700 Cub Scouts from the Boy Scouts of America Tuckahoe District attended a Cuboree at American Legion Park in Hollidaysburg. Besides physical contests, space and science demonstrations were held.
Members of the Apache, Winnebago, Navajo, Sioux and Cheyenne tribes were holding a Powwow at the Logan Valley Mall for a week of the display of native dances, songs, crafts, basket weaving, painting, tom tom playing and teepee building. The event had the approval of the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Altoona animal control officials, John Iorio head, were trying to figure out what to do about a five-foot pet alligator owned by Michael Pattie on Broad Avenue. Pattie said that gator liked to get belly rubs and take showers. Pattie said he kept it in his bedroom.
The Blair County Community Endowment was to hold its third annual Flag Day celebration at Gospel Hill Park, which was recently renovated by EADS Engineering and with music by the 46th Regiment Band of Legion Guard. A weeping cherry tree was planted in memory of Altoona Water Authority Field Operations Director Jerry Troxell, who was killed in an auto accident.

The Frontier Patriots Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, Bob Williams first vice president, presented a check to Boy Scout Josh Dunkle for a dedication of his veterans memorial project at Legion Park in Hollidaysburg.
The Blair Dance Academy, Rebecca Reese director, was presenting its 14th annual recital at the Jaffa Shrine Center in Altoona called “Icons,” with two performances, the young students performing first, then the senior ballet, tap, jazz, musical, hip-hop and clogging senior members.
