‘Smash Bros’ film no ‘pipe’ dream
In case you haven’t been paying attention, or didn’t pick up your GO+TV magazine in this weekend’s edition of the Mirror to check out the local listings, Nintendo had a new movie come out this week, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” a sequel to the “Super Mario Bros. Movie” that came out in 2023.
I have plans to go see it this weekend with my brother and nephews ahead of the Easter holiday and my 34th birthday this Sunday, but I’m sliding slightly into spoiler territory this week to discuss the growing possibility that Nintendo could potentially be gearing up for something much, much bigger. With the news from this week that the character Fox McCloud of the “Star Fox” game series will be making an appearance in “Galaxy Movie” leaves me wondering about the possibility of something large on the
horizon — a “Super Smash Brothers” super movie, akin to Marvel’s series of “Avengers” movies from the 2010s that culminated in the 2018 phenomenon, “Endgame.”
It hardly feels like a pipe dream, with two “Mario” movies already done and the long-
awaited “Legend of Zelda” movie scheduled to come out in 2027.
You have actors or voice actors already cast for most of the roster from the original “Smash Bros.” game from 1999, with the only ones that would need to be found being Samus Aran (Metroid), Captain Falcon (F-Zero), Kirby (Kirby), Ness (Mother) and
Pikachu and Jigglypuff (Pokemon), and as far as the Pokemon characters are
concerned, getting voice actors for characters that only say their own names wouldn’t be all that difficult to pull off.
Any announcement is likely still a year or more away, but with “Galaxy” supposedly having two post-credit scenes, it leaves this nerd plenty excited.
