The weather was nearly perfect at Mansion Park Tuesday for the first day of the District 6 Class 3A track and field championships, and many of the athletes took advantage with stellar performances themselves.
Altoona senior Kihlee Noel and her teammates senior Sophia O’Dea and junior Ashlyn Noce broke meet records in their respective events, and Mifflin County star Carter Smith set a Mansion Park facility, District 6 meet record and set a new Pennsylvania No. 1 time of 4:05.68 in the 1600-meter run.
O’Dea’s time of 24.93 seconds in the 200 dash preliminaries was both a meet and Mansion Park facility record. She will race in the final today — which is not expected to be as nice of a day weather-wise.
“I thought it was going to be much colder today, so it was definitely nice to have the good weather,” Noel said. “I really pushed myself during indoor (track) this year and last year, and I came out and felt really good during warmups.”
Noel broke the record with a throw of 40 feet, 8.5 inches, just a quarter inch from her personal best.

“It was exciting, because the meet record had been held by Lynette Howard,” Noel said. “I won her award at the Mountain Lion Classic and have always looked up to her, so it was a full-circle moment for my last time throwing shot at Mansion.”
Howard still holds the Altoona record with a throw of 42 feet, 1 inch in 2007, and Noel, who repeated as champion, will have one more chance at that mark in Shippensburg at the PIAA championships next weekend.
“I am very proud of myself,” Noel said. “I just kept taking myself back to sophomore year when I didn’t win, and I didn’t want to feel like that again.”
Noce was part of an incredible 1600 run that saw the top three finishers break the previous District 6 record.
The junior set the meet record with a time of 4:54.37. State College’s Evelyn Younkin and Somerset’s Libby Marteeny finished second and third and qualified for states through the qualifying standard.

“We definitely pushed each other, and it all came down to the last lap,” Noce said. “It was honestly a really fun race. We were all striving to do our best.”
Marteeny, a freshman, had bested Noce at the Altoona Mountain Lion Classic earlier in the season.
“I really focus on the larger meets like districts and the postseason,” Noce said. “I wanted to maintain my title here and personally improve. It was good motivation, because I knew we would all be tight. I’m really proud of myself, because I have been looking to better my mile. It was exciting to break through my PR.”
Noce’s Altoona teammates dominated in the triple jump.
Hannah Owulade won the triple jump with a distance of 38 feet, 9.25 inches, and Jill Long was second with a jump of 38 feet, 7.75 inches — the new No. 3 and No. 4 jumps in the state at their classifications. State College’s Saige Cunningham also made states on a qualifying standard.
“I always love competing against my friend Jill,” Owulade said. “We are always going back and forth finishing either first or second. It’s fun to see what we can do.”
Owulade also was first in her 100 hurdles prelim with a time of 15.23 seconds and qualified first for today’s finals in the 300 hurdles, but she was most pleased about sharing the podium and earning a trip to states with Long on Tuesday.
“I see the way (Jill) jumps, and I critique myself based off her critiques, and it’s the same way for her with my jumps and critiques,” Owulade said. “That helps both of us improve.”
Smith is the defending PIAA champion and set a pace in the 1600 that led five runners — including Hollidaysburg fifth-place finisher Reuben Manfred — to reach the state qualifying standard.
Manfred ran it in a personal-best time of 4:17.82.
His Hollidaysburg teammate, Cole DeLattre, won the triple jump with a distance of 44 feet, 3 inches.
“I have competed against a lot of great kids here, and finally being on top of that podium feels great,” DeLattre said. “It took a lot today. I didn’t have the best jumps, but I got the job done when it mattered.”
DeLattre earned his first trip to the PIAA meet.
“We have about a week and a half to prepare,” DeLattre said. “I am looking forward to competing at states for the first time. I’m very excited to be out there and give it my best effort. It’s my fourth year competing here at districts, so to finally break through feels great.”
