Kelly Mazzante added as Penn State assistant

UNIVERSITY PARK — New Penn State women’s basketball head coach Tanisha Wright announced the addition of Lady Lion legend Kelly Mazzante as an assistant coach on her staff on Wednesday.

Mazzante and Wright played together for three seasons (2001-04) for the Lady Lions. She returns to Penn State with 12 years of collegiate coaching experience, including her most recent three-year stint at Georgetown.

“I am thrilled to welcome Kelly back home to Happy Valley with me,” Wright said. “Having one of the best players in Penn State history to coach alongside me is crucial in what we are building. Her knowledge of not just the game of basketball, but Lady Lion basketball will be essential as we bring this program back to where it belongs.”

Mazzante, a Williamsport native, is the all-time leading scorer at Penn State, boasting 2,919 career points, ranking fourth all-time in the Big Ten Conference record book.

Mazzante led the Lady Lions to two-straight Big Ten regular season titles and four NCAA Tournament appearances including a trip to the Sweet 16 (2003) and the Elite Eight (2004).

Upon graduating from Penn State, Mazzante was drafted as the No. 18 overall pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft by the Charlotte Sting. She spent three seasons in the Queen City before the team was disbanded in 2007. She was picked up by the Phoenix Mercury, where she helped her team to two WNBA Championships in 2007 and 2009.

Mazzante recently spent a three-year stint at Georgetown. She held multiple titles throughout her time with the Hoyas, first joining the staff as an assistant coach in 2023, then being promoted to recruiting coordinator in 2024 and elevated further to associate head coach prior to the 2025-26 season.

Mazzante also spent four seasons at Bucknell, including three as an assistant and an associate head coach promotion in 2022-23.

Mazzante began her coaching career in 2014 as an assistant coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
