Stroup clutch for Tyrone baseball in win

HUNTINGDON — Jon Stroup, who pitched 5 2/3 solid innings to help Tyrone get into extra innings, hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning to push the Golden Eagles to a 2-1 victory over Huntingdon in the Class 3A baseball quarterfinals Monday afternoon.

Colton Frye also hit a sacrifice fly for Tyrone to tie the game after Huntingdon took an early lead on an Owen Herncane groundout.

Wyatt Kustenbauder, Brayden Parsons and Conner McClure each had two hits for Tyrone, which will play Bald Eagle Area in the semifinals.

“The game was a very well pitched game on both sides,” Tyrone coach Kevin Soellner said. “We were able to get a few extra hits and had a couple of clutch hits. Parsons came up in the top of the eighth and drove one into the right-center field gap for a triple then we were able to get him home on a sac fly by Jon Stroup. The kids hung in there as well as I’ve seen them all year. We had a couple base running errors where we got picked off second that may have hurt us in the scoring column a little bit. I believe that all the teams in 3A are very good and very well coached. It will be a tough road to go through Bald Eagle.”
