Altoona grad helping Butler CC hoop team

Altoona Area High School graduate Ashton Neely scored 19 points to help the Butler County Community College men’s basketball team move to 2-0 on Tuesday night with a 114-108 victory against Owens Community College, Perrysburg, Ohio.

Four honored

Four Penn State Altoona women’s soccer student-athletes were voted to the All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference squad.

Sophomore defender Madeline Boser was a second-team All-AMCC selection, while freshman forward Kira Trexler, senior midfielder Rachel Rutkowski and junior goalkeeper Mya Torres were all third-team all-conference picks.

Boser started all 18 games for the Lions this fall. The sophomore makes her second appearance on an All-AMCC team, after earning third-team recognition as a freshman last year.

Trexler started 13 games during an exceptional freshman campaign, before her season was cut short due to injury in October. She totaled five goals and six assists.

Rutkowski finished her four-year Lions career with another strong performance as a senior this fall, during which she made 17 starts for Penn State Altoona. She finished the season with one goal scored and two assists.

Torres, in her first season, made 17 starts at keeper, logging 1,493 minutes between the pipes. The junior finished the season with a 5-5-6 overall record and ranked second in the AMCC in save percentage (.835), third in shutouts (six) and third in saves (111).

Velarde recognized

Penn State Altoona sophomore forward Felipe Velarde was voted to the All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference team in men’s soccer.

Velarde was a third-team selection to the all-conference team.

In his first season with Penn State Altoona, Velarde was 10th in the AMCC in assists. He played in 15 games this season, making 12 starts. The sophomore was named the AMCC Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 27.
