Bishop Carroll gets balanced offense in easy win

EBENSBURG — Seeing one opposing player on the basketball court finishing up in double figures can be tough, but that can be neutralized when you yourself have a team that has three players in double figures.

While Glendale’s Madison Peterson scored all of the Lady Vikings points, Bishop Carroll Catholic’s youth showed how far it has come in the District 6 Class 1A girls playoffs.

The No. 3-seed Lady Huskies had a trio combine to score 46 points en route to a 56-16 drubbing over the sixth-seeded Lady Vikings.

“That’s the whole idea about being (in the playoffs),” Bishop Carroll Coach John Strittmatter said. “They’re starting to gel, and that’s good.”

The Lady Huskies’ (17-6) reward is second-seeded St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy — which knocked off Purchase Line — this Saturday at a site and time to be announced. Glendale finished at 12-10.

“It’s tough to win a game when you have one girl doing all of the scoring,” Glendale coach Chase Hill said. “We wanted at least three of our starters to hit double-digits; it didn’t happen.”

The Lady Huskies produced the bulk of their damage by turning turnovers into points. Avery Myers, off the takeaway, drained a jumper putting Bishop Carroll on the board.

Peterson scored Glendale’s first bucket off an inbound pass just over a minute into the contest, but from there, it was tough for the Lady Vikings to hold on.

Adelyn Myers’ putback, followed by an Emily Lucko jumper off a takeaway, ignited a 13-0 run for an 18-4 Lady Husky lead after the first quarter. She totaled 14 points.

“If you shut one down, we’ve got two over here that can do the job,” Strittmatter said. “I feel bad for Glendale. Glendale didn’t have that. They had (Peterson), she’s very good. Other than that, it was tough. It shows the different conferences that you play in. We’re in the Laurel Highlands (Athletic Conference), and I consider that one of the toughest leagues around. For being a single-A school, we do pretty good.”

Lucko took over during the second quarter as she knocked a 3-pointer for the first bucket of the second. She scored 10 of her team-high 18 points. Ava Pablic added a feed for a bucket that got her two of her 14 points, which gave the Lady Huskies an impressive 35-8 halftime lead.

Hill is proud of the effort Peterson put into the program during his first year on the job. She is one of two seniors moving on after the season.

“She’s done a ton for our program,” Hill said. “We wouldn’t be here without all she contributed to us this year. Hitting her 1,000th (point) was one of the goals I had, I know that’s one of the goals she had. A big loss, but very good player, very good athlete. I’m proud of her.”

Hill is also looking back fondly upon his first season as the Lady Vikings coach.

“I just told them if you would have told me at our summer shootarounds that we’d have been a (No.) 6 seed in the playoffs, I would’ve said you were crazy,” he said.

He says he has no regrets.

“We won the games we had to, went through a little rough stretch early in the season, finished very hot. I’m proud of them. They came a long way from our scrimmages and our first game to compete in the playoffs,” he said.
