Tyrone junior Sarah Chichester began the week by winning all four of her events at the Bellwood-Antis Invitational and closed it by winning all four — the 400- and 200-meter dashes and the 400 and 1600 relays — at one of the biggest meets of the year, the Altoona Area Mountain Lion Classic at Mansion Park on Friday.
The final victory in the 1600 relay pushed the Lady Eagles past Bellwood-Antis, 91-90.5, for the team championship.
“I am really proud of these girls,” Tyrone coach Brad Kanuch said. “They brought a full effort today and showed a lot of grit. They continue to push themselves and set goals to accomplish.”
Chichester is adapting to running the 200 and 400 after replacing the 100 dash with the 400 recently. The turnaround time between the two events has been a challenge that the junior has been more than up for so far.
“It’s not easy. But I just focus on my recovery in between,” Chichester said. “I get the fuel I need, make sure I rest up and stay stretched out so that with the quick turnaround, I’m good to go.”

Chichester won the 400 in 1:01.01 and the 200 in 26.32 narrowly beating regular challengers Kate Eckenrode of Penn Cambria and Ella Cherry of Bellwood-Antis. Eckenrode won the 100 dash in 12.59 seconds earlier in the meet and Cherry — who was selected as the Coach Bill Reimer Outstanding Performer in Class 2A girls — won the triple jump with a distance of 37 feet, 10.25 inches.
Chichester and the Tyrone girls won the 400 relay in 51.15 seconds and the 1600 relay to clinch the meet in 4:05.34.
“I love our relays and all the girls on it,” Chichester said. “We’re best friends, and that helps a lot. We push each other every day to set new goals and new records. I couldn’t ask for a better group.”
The Lady Eagles lost to Bellwood-Antis in both the regular-season matchup and at the Bellwood-Antis Invitational.
“Beating this Bellwood team is a big deal,” Kanuch said. “They are a great team throughout the track and field. We all set individual and relay goals for the meet, and it helped us beat the best team in the district.”

Also helping the Tyrone cause were Claire Lehman, who won the 300 hurdles in 46.25 seconds, and Lola Woomer, who won the high jump by clearing 5 feet. Bellwood’s Emma Taneyhill won the 2A discus with a distance of 134-6.
Other girls winners included Cambria Heights’ Brielle McMillen, who won the long jump with a distance of 16 feet, 9.5 inches and Central Cambria’s Paige Alexander in the 800 run in 2:22.25. Alexander also helped the Lady Devils win the 3200 relay with a time of 9:40.29.
On the boys side, Bellwood-Antis topped Tyrone, 86-60, behind wins by Jayce Quick, Owen Stoltzfus and Cameron Nelson.
Nelson won the 110 hurdles in 15.1 seconds and was second in 300 hurdles in 40.77.
“He definitely got stronger physically,” Bellwood-Antis coach Nick Lovrich said. “Cam is a tall, skinny guy. He took care of his core muscles, which really helped him in the hurdles and helps him be a little stronger in those, especially the 110s where you can get bumped around a little bit. That’s definitely improved with him. He also has great mental strength. At the Bellwood Invitational, he stumbled a little bit and still came back and got first. He’s been able to overcome adversity, which has been great for him.”
Owen Stoltzfus caught Homer-Center’s Riley Cobaugh down the stretch to win the 400 in 50.98 seconds, and Quick won the disc with a throw of 153 feet, 1 inch.
“Jayce has been very consistent all season in the throws for us,” Lovrich said. “Both in the shot and the disc. The disc is his favorite. He works a lot on it, and the hard work paid off this week with him getting a big win at probably one of the biggest meets in the state this weekend.”
Other area boys winners included Central’s Jacob Heuston in the 800 with a time of 2:02.77 and Bishop Guilfoyle Academy’s Alex Krimmel, who won the high jump by clearing 6-3. Bishop Carroll’s Eli Cunningham won the long jump with a distance of 22-2.5 by half an inch over Tyrone’s Mason Emigh.
Central Cambria’s Ethan Haycisak, who won the Coach Bill Reimer Outstanding Performer in 2A boys, won the 1600 in 4:29.79, the 3200 in 9:29.42 and helped the Central Cambria boys win the 3200 relay.
“It felt amazing to break two barriers I have been working at for a good bit,” Haycisak said. “I finally broke 4:30 in the mile and finally broke 9:30 after getting 9:32 a couple weeks ago. It’s nice when you get to race against such great competition. I wouldn’t have been able to do what I did today without (Mifflin County’s) Reese (Cubbison, the 3A champ). He held a perfect pace the whole way and just had a little more than me at the end, but it was a perfect race.”
Haycisak also took home the Todd Malligan Award as the 3200 champion. Malligan, a 1994 Altoona graduate, was a state medalist and still holds the Mountain Lion record in the event.
“It was definitely cool knowing something more was on the line,” Haycisak said. “Not many people get a plaque like this. It’s a novelty and a cool thing to win.”
