Altoona wins 3A Mountain Lion Classic title over State College

With several winners, Lady Lions earn 3A title over State College

The Altoona girls enjoyed an excellent meet at Friday’s Altoona Area Mountain Lion Classic at Mansion Park, but senior Hannah Owulade’s performance shined the brightest.

Owulade was selected the Coach Bill Reimer Outstanding Performer among Class 3A girls after winning the 100-meter hurdles in 15.31 seconds, winning the long jump with a distance of 17 feet, 11 inches and winning the 300 hurdles in 46.73. She was also second in the triple jump with a distance of 37-10.5.

“There’s always room for improvement. I could always do better,” Owulade said. “But I’m happy to put up the points and get three wins. This has been a good season. I have improved so much from last year. I’m trying to just do the best I can for my senior year.”

Owulade capped her meet by winning the 300 hurdles and hit the final hurdle but still managed to cross the finish line first after giving everything she had left.

“I’m really grateful with the 300. It’s all about mental toughness,” Owulade said. “This year, I have been a little rocky on that. I’m happy with the win, regardless of hitting that last hurdle.”

Owulade’s performance helped the Lady Lions easily win the team title, 168-145, over State College.

She said her goal is to continue to improve and work toward the future.

“I want to place at states,” Owulade said. “And I want to run in college.”

It was an emotional day for thrower Kihlee Noel, who received the Lynette Howard Award after winning the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 9 inches. Howard was a 2007 Altoona graduate and a two-time state medalist.

“I did not know that was happening, so I was really excited to get that because it’s Lynette Howard, who I have been looking up to for a long time,” Noel said. “I have been trying to chase her records, so that is definitely really cool.”

Noel also won the discus with a throw of 137 feet, 3 inches.

“I feel really good about the season,” Noel said. “I’m really happy with my field series and feel like I have continued to progress every time I compete. I am feeling really good going into our championship season.”

The Altoona girls got off to a hot start by winning the 3200 relay when Emma Etters caught her State College opponent and passed her in the final stretch.

Other Altoona winners included Annalyse Yost, who won the javelin with a throw of 132 feet, 2 inches, Ashlyn Noce, a winner in the 3200 with a time of 10:49.96, and Jill Long, who set a new season-best mark of 38-0.25 in the triple jump.

On the boys side, State College ran away with the team title by a score of 103-68 over Altoona behind Jayden Byrd, who was the Bill Reimer Outstanding Performer in 3A boys.

The Mountain Lions got a win from Colin Etters in the 400 with a time of 51.26 seconds.

Altoona nearly had another win from Mekhi Jackson in the triple jump, but Hollidaysburg’s Cole DeLattre claimed the title with a new personal-best distance of 45 feet, 7.75 inches on his final jump.

“I knew I had to step up and do something,” DeLattre said. “Mekhi had a really good job and put the pressure on me, and I really just used it as fuel. I knew the Lord was with me and used my strength and was able to get a good jump and get the win.”

DeLattre is hoping Friday’s jump is the start of a big final stretch of the season.

“I am super proud of it. It has taken a lot of hard work,” DeLattre said. “I feel like I can hold my phases a little more to stretch that distance out even a little more. I have two meets left that are guaranteed and hopefully states if I qualify, but I feel like I can continue to trail hard and get my steps right so that I can maximize my distance.”
