Memorial Day events scheduled

The following Memorial Day parades and services have been announced.

Saturday

Lakemont

Lakemont Lions Club will conduct its annual memorial service at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 23, at the Lakemont Veterans’ Monument. David Flurie, LCDR, USCG Ret., a veteran of both the Marine Corps and Coast Guard, is the featured speaker.

The flag raising at the ceremony will be done by Steve Nader, retired 1st Sergeant with the Army National Guard 28th Division Band.

Taps will be played by bugler Matthew English and a wreath presentation will be by Lions Pete and Connie Harter.

The flag to be raised this year was procured by U.S. Rep. John Joyce and presented to the Lakemont Lions Club in April. The flag is certified as having been flown over the U.S. Capitol.

The monument is situated at the junction of Lake and Shand Avenues in the Lakemont section of Altoona. All are welcome to attend the 30-minute service. Those attending should bring a lawn chair for seating.

Sunday-Monday

Claysburg

The Claysburg American Legion will host its 92nd annual Memorial Day programs with services at local cemeteries.

Services on Sunday, May 24, begin at Sproul at 1:15 p.m., move to King at 1:35 p.m., Imler at 2:05 p.m., Greenfield at 2:25 p.m., Lower Claar at 2:50 p.m., Upper Claar at 3:10 p.m. and Mt. Hope at 3:45 p.m.

The Memorial Day service on Monday, May 25, will begin at 10 a.m. at the Claysburg Union Cemetery. Matt Imler will be the guest speaker. The Claysburg American Legion Band and the Claysburg Community Chorus will take part in the ceremony. In the case of inclement weather, the service will move to Christ Lutheran Church, 206 Walnut St., Claysburg.

Monday

Altoona

The Blair County War Veterans Council and City of Altoona Memorial Day Parade in downtown Altoona forms at 10 a.m. and steps off at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 25. The parade goes from Eighth Avenue and 17th Street to 12th Avenue and 12th Street, 11th Avenue to Robert E. Laws Veterans’ Mall, where a ceremony will be held.

Ashville

Memorial Day activities in Ashville have been a tradition since the end of WWII. A parade begins at 9 a.m. and includes the McConnel family band of 40 members, an honor guard of veterans, Boy Scouts, fire trucks and Little League teams.

A Memorial Day service will follow the parade. The featured speaker is Jordan Settle, a former captain who served in the 10th Mountain Division and was twice deployed to Afghanistan.

Settle is an executive with Defenseshield, a corporation that provides ballistic shields and security devices to the U.S. government and other countries throughout the world. In addition, Settle is the chairman of AMED, founder of Sweat for Vets , a member of the Jaffa Shrine and serves on the board of Penn Mont Academy.

Bellwood

Bellwood will host a Memorial Day parade Monday, May 25. Lineup begins at 9 a.m. with the parade set to start at 9:30 a.m. from Housers Grocery to the Bellwood-Antis High School.

Calvary Cemetery

The 79th Annual Memorial Day Field Mass is being held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 25, at Calvary Cemetery.

Carrolltown Bakerton/Elmora, St. Benedict

The Memorial Day military services on Monday, May 25, for Carrolltown, Bakerton/Elmora and St. Benedict are as follows: Carrolltown Veterans Monument (American Legion) at 10 a.m.; Bakerton/Elmora Veterans Memorial at 10:30 a.m.; and St. Benedict Veterans Memorial at 11 a.m.

Duncansville

The Duncansville Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post 8724 will conduct a memorial service at 8:45 a.m. Monday, May 25, outside the front entrance of Carson Valley Church of the Brethren, 122 Church Road, Duncansville.

After the service, the Blair County Veterans Honor Guard will conduct memorial ceremonies at these cemeteries: Foot of Ten Bible Church, 9:45 a.m.; Newry Lutheran and St. Patrick’s, 10:15 a.m.; St. Patrick’s Church, Newry, 10:30 a.m.; Leamersville Church of the Brethren, 10:45 a.m.; Vicksburg Grace Brethren Church, Hollidaysburg, 11:15 a.m.; and Franciscan Monastery, Hollidaysburg, 11:30 a.m.

Each ceremony will include a reading, Chaplain’s Prayer, three-volley salute and the sounding of Taps.

Ebensburg

Ebensburg’s annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 25, in Veteran’s Memorial Park in downtown Ebensburg.

The Memorial Day Ceremony in Veteran’s Park will follow the parade at 10:30 a.m. In the case of inclement weather, the parade will not be held and the ceremony will take place inside at the Ebensburg Presbyterian Church, 200 North Center St., at 10:30 a.m.

Nearly 20 local organizations and groups have registered to participate, including military service men and women, Scout troops, sports teams, the Central Cambria Marching Band and classic vehicle owners.

All participants will assemble for check-in and line-up at the Ebensburg Public Library on Highland Avenue between 9 to 9:45 a.m.

Hollidaysburg

The American Legion Post 516 in Hollidaysburg is holding a Memorial Day parade and ceremony at 9:45 a.m. Monday, May 25. The parade route is up Allegheny Street to the Courthouse, and the ceremony will take place at the Diamond in Hollidaysburg directly after the parade.

The parade features the Hollidaysburg High School Marching Band, fire trucks, floats, sports cars, Boy Scouts and Danny Lightner’s Gold Star Family. Blair County Court of Common Pleas Judge Jackie Bernard will be the keynote speaker.

Juniata

The Juniata section of Altoona will host a parade at 9:30 a.m. Monday, followed by a service at the Juniata VFW. The parade begins at North Eighth Street and North Fourth Avenue.

Martinsburg

A Memorial Day parade will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 25, beginning at Morrisons Cove Memorial Park. The parade will go to the Veterans’ Memorial in Fairview Cemetery, where Martinsburg mayor and Navy veteran Richard Brantner Sr. will speak. In the case of inclement weather, the program will move to the dining room at the park and the parade will be canceled.

Patton

Patton plans to hold several services in honor of Memorial Day.

Veterans services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 23, at Glendale Campground; immediately following, gravesite services will be held at Flinton, Beaver Valley, St. Lawrence, St. Augustine and ending at the Revolutionary War cemetery.

The Memorial Day parade, led by Patton Fire Company No. 1, Cambria Heights Highlander Marching Band and veterans, will kick off at 9 a.m.

All interested youth groups are encouraged to attend.

Veterans services will take place immediately following the parade (about 10:30 a.m.), will be held at Ss. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Cemetery, Ss. Peter & Paul Orthodox Cemetery, Fairview and St. Mary/St. George Cemetery. All will proceed for services at the Veterans Memorial Park at Patton Recreational Park & Pool for rifle firing and the playing of Taps to honor those who have served their country in war and peace. Services will then continue at Walter McCoy Post 614 American Legion and end at John White Post 779 VFW.

A luncheon will be served for veterans and guests at the conclusion of the ceremonies.

Portage

Portage will hold a service at 10 a.m. Monday, May 25, at Prospect Cemetery. At 10:30 a.m., a service will be held at the Wilmer Monument, Wilmer, followed by an 11 a.m. service at the Bens Creek Social Citizens Club.

West Decatur

Boy Scout Troop 43 of West Decatur will conduct a Memorial Day Service at 10 a.m. Monday, May 25, at Mocks Hill Cemetery in West Decatur.
