Mirror staff members rewarded

Eleven Mirror staff members won a total of 14 awards during the Pennsylvania Newspaper Press Association and Western Pennsylvania Press Club contests.
First-place PNA winners include Nick Anna (graphic/photo illustration), photographer Gary Baranec (sports photo), Scott Franco (headline writing) and Buck Frank (sports story).
Michael Boytim won a Golden Quill from the Western Pennsylvania Press Club for his sports story after being a finalist with Frank.
The Golden Quill banquet was held May 29 at the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh.
Second-place PNA winners were Anna (graphic/photo illustration), Patt Keith (feature beat reporting) and Russ O’Reilly (news feature).
Greg Bock won third place in the PNA for news feature, and Cory Giger (sports beat reporting) and Joe Kasprzyk (editorials) won honorable mention recognition.
Kay Stephens won three awards in the Pennsylvania Women’s Press Association. Stephens won third place for news feature photo and honorable mentions for both religion and business stories.
The PNA, which includes the PWPA, held its recognition banquet on May 18 at the Harrisburg Hilton.
“We’ve been fortunate to have many staff members recognized over the years for their outstanding work, and this year was no exception,” Neil Rudel, Mirror managing editor, said. “It’s gratifying to be recognized by our peers, and it’s important for the community to be aware of the kind of journalism that continues to be practiced at the Mirror.”
