Altoona man accused of electronics theft

Kearney allegedly stole $3,600 of items from Indiana Walmart

A city man has been accused in the theft of more than $3,600 of electronics merchandise from the Indiana Walmart more than a month ago.

State police charged Thomas Kearney, 39, of Altoona with retail theft and receiving stolen property, both felonies, and a misdemeanor count of criminal mischief, in connection with an interrupted attempt to push a cart loaded with stolen goods from the store at 4:20 a.m. May 31.

Store workers halted Kearney, but he fled. They provided the description of his vehicle and images of the suspect from the store’s security video system to state police.

Investigators reported Kearney attempted a similar theft at Walmart in Blairsville, about one hour later and again was interrupted by store employees.

Following leads generated from publicizing the security photos, Trooper Cliff Greenfield said, state police identified Kearney and filed charges against him June 18 in Homer City District Court.

Greenfield reported that Kearney has been incarcerated to await court action.

Online court records show Kearney is in Bedford County Prison on $50,000 cash bail after waiving charges of felony retail theft, misdemeanor theft by unlawful taking and summary criminal mischief on July 10.

Online court records also show Kearney has pending charges of possession of a controlled substance by a person not registered, possession of drug paraphernalia, DUI of a controlled substance, driving while license is suspended or revoked and obstructed window in Allegheny County.

Kearney has previously faced charges in Blair, Clearfield, Cambria, Huntingdon and Indiana counties, online court records show.
