Police looking for two local men

Police are seeking public help in a three-county search for two local men, both of whom have been missing for days under what troopers call “suspicious circumstances.”

State police are looking for 19-year-old Damian Michael Staniszewski of Duncansville and 32-year-old James Edward Smith of Portage, acquaintances who were last seen the afternoon of March 26 at Smith’s home.

Police have released few details about the nature of their disappearance but said in a Monday news release that the situation is suspicious and that a “very active investigation” is underway.

“It is a very active investigation and additional details … are being kept to a minimum,” said Trooper Cliff Greenfield, a state police public information officer handling the case.

Greenfield said the case is headed by the Troop A Major Case Team, a regional unit that handles complex investigations. The case is complicated by the fact that it covers three counties, he said.

Police said a vehicle Staniszewski used was found at 3 a.m. March 28 — nearly two days after the men were last seen — in Conemaugh Township, Somerset County.

Troopers have solicited public help in finding them missing men; those with any information are urged to call Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers at 1-800-4PA-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous and could receive a cash reward, police said.

Staniszewski is 19 years old, 6-foot-1 in height and 160 pounds. He has brown, curly, shoulder-length hair, brown eyes and was last seen in a hooded sweatshirt, cap and black sneakers.

Smith is 32 years old, 6 feet tall and 160 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes.
