Bedford County vets of Revolutionary War listed in new book

“Revolutioonary War Veterans of Bedford County, Pennsylvania,” by Helen Hill Greenberg, Vaughn E. Whisker Sr. and James Biser Whisker was published on Jan. 28, 2026, by Kindle Direct Publishing on Amazon.

Few books other than the Holy Bible have been in the making longer than this compilation of Revolutionary War soldiers of Bedford County, along with the places of their burial.

Helen Hill Greenberg began collecting the names and burial location of these Patriots in 1939. Vaughn E. Whisker Sr. joined her in 1970 and James Biser Whisker produced a typescript of their research in 1985.

That list was published by the local historical society on its website, with the original intention being to add documented additions as volunteers submitted useful and reliable information.

There were no additions made after 1985 and James then began to update the names and vital information, largely through postings on the internet. In his introduction, James makes it clear that this is far from a final or definitive list, but is the compilation of what is currently available.

Among the several important sources of information were the Pennsylvania Archives listing of known soldiers and militiamen; Revolutionary War pension applications; posted family genealogies; and county histories. Included are names of those who participated in the Frankstown Massacre and those Bedford County soldiers who fought with the 8th Pennsylvania Regiment while in support of General Washington in the New Jersey and Philadelphia campaigns. James has already added several names and additional information as supplied by early readers.

Pension applications by militiamen such as William Fraser (“the first white child born outside Ft. Bedford”) prove the existence of the reconstructed Fort Bedford during the Revolution. Other pension applications show militia activity against the native aborigines, especially following their raids along the frontier.

While the majority of names included in this book show only service and military units, there are many longer and, at times, quite fascinating looks at our Patriot ancestors who endured terrible hardships to forge the colonies into a free and independent nation.

The 195-page book is $19.95 and is available on Amazon.com.

Starting at $3.83/week.
