Altoona hockey gets balance in win

The Altoona Area High School ice hockey team jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead Tuesday night en route to a 6-2 win over Conemaugh Valley at Galactic Ice. The Mountain Lions got six goals from six different players: Cayden Helsel, Sam Kauffman, Noah Staines, Chris Kozminski, Ryan Marinak and Carter Panick. Goalie Seth Conrad stopped 15 of the 17 shots he faced in aiding the Mountain Lion victory. Logan Lambertus scored both goals for the Rams, who were out-shot, 50-19. Piper, Bettwy help lead Altoona gymnasts to win

Altoona’s Claire Piper placed first in each event, scoring a 37.4 for her all-around score as the Lady Lions took first, second and third in the vault, bars, beam and floor while beating Ridgway, 140.95-105.2, in high school gymnastics Wednesday night. BG shift in class might be looming

The submitted numbers were due to the PIAA in December. Since that deadline, teams have had the chance to choose whether or not to play up, and that deadline has now passed as well. The only remaining issue before classifications for the 2024-2025 season become official is hashing out which teams are impacted by the PIAA’s success factor. BC rifle falls short on tiebreaker

GALLITZIN — Meyersdale defeated Bishop Carroll, in high school rifle action at the Gallitzen Sportsmens Club Monday afternoon. Both teams finished regulation play at 1,245-1,245 but Meyersdale won, using an integer scoring system where anything 10.3 and above is noted and used as a tiebreaking value. The Red Raiders had the most Major 10s, also called an “inner” score in rifle competition. Karli Schoop led the Huskies with a 256, followed by Seth Cunningham’s 253. Altoona boys pick up the sweep

The Altoona Area High School boys swim team defeated Huntingdon, 77-71, and Cambria Heights, 90-58, on Monday night at the AAHS Fieldhouse pool. Trevor Wilson won the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke for the Mountain Lions, and Chris Fox won the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle. The Huntingdon boys edged Heights, 82-63.
