PC’s Hoover wins strong weight class

CRESSON — Penn Cambria’s Trent Hoover has been very successful in high school wrestling career, including being a two-time state qualifier, but he had never been voted the Outstanding Wrestler of any tournament. On Saturday night in the Panther Holiday Classic at Mount Alloysius College, the Panther senior 152-pounder added that feat to his wrestling resume. Weaver places 2nd

MILL HALL — Altoona’s Braiden Weaver reached the 114-pound finals of the rugged King of the Mountain on Saturday at Central Mountain High School, but he had to settle for second place in high school wrestling. The second-seeded Weaver dropped a 4-3 decision to Chestnut Ridge’s PIAA Class 2A state runner-up Dominic Deputy in the finals. Weaver and Deputy are actually training partners at Orchard Wrestling Club. Area four qualify for semifinal round

CRESSON — Four wrestlers from the Mirror coverage area advanced to the semifinals of the 50-team Panther Holiday Classic on Friday at Mount Aloysius College. Returning Panther Classic champion Trent Hoover advanced to the semifinals at 152 pounds, as did Tyrone’s Braden Ewing at 285, Glendale’s Daniel Williams at 285 and Huntingdon/Williamsburg’s Andrew McMonagle at 189. Tyrone coach impressed with early results

LOYSBURG — Tyrone High School wrestling coach Quentin Wright was a former two-time NCAA champion and four-time All-American during his wrestling days at Penn State University. It takes a lot to impress Wright on a wrestling mat, but this year’s Golden Eagles team has been managing to accomplish the feat.
