TYRONE -- Nine wrestlers from the Mirror coverage area advanced to the semifinals of the first Laurel Highlands Championships on Friday at Tyrone High School.
Tyrone advanced four to the semifinals in Logan Rumberger (127), Kyle Scott (172), Andrew Weaver (189) and Braden Ewing (285). Penn Cambria advanced three in Layton Munyon (121), Trent Hoover (152) and Nick Summerville (215).
The Golden Eagles are ninth in the team standings with 69.5 points, while the Panthers (56.5) are 11th.
Central Cambria's Burke Niebauer (114) and Huntingdon/Williamsburg's Andrew McMonagle (189) will also be wrestling in today's 9 a.m. semifinals. The consolation quarterfinals will run with the semifinals.
The consolation semifinals and seventh-place bouts will follow. The championship finals, third-place and fifth-place bouts will follow the 1 p.m. parade of champions.
Rumberger, seeded fifth, had a pin and decision to reach the semis, where he faces Bishop McCort's superstar Jax Forrest. The top-seeeded Scott recorded two first-period pins to advance to face Clearfield's fifth-seeded Will Domico.
The third-seeded Weaver had two pins, and he'll face second-seeded McMonagle in the semis. McMonagle breezed to the semifinals with two first-period pins.
The top-seeded Ewing rolled to a technical fall and pin to advance to face Huntingdon's fifth-seeded Landon Erdman.
The fifth-seeded Munyon pinned both of his opponents to earn a semifinal matchup against Penns Valley's top-seeded Jack Darlington.
Trent Hoover could get a rematch with Penns Valley's Ty Watson. The top-seeded Hoover had a technical fall and pin, and he'll face Clearfield's fifth-seeded Ty Aveni in the semis. Watson, who had two pins, faces Bishop McCort's Melvin Miller.
Summerville, seeded fourth, earned a major decision and a 5-2 win over Huntingdon's Lincoln Miller. He gets Somerset's top-seeded Rowan Holmes in the semifinals.
The fourth-seeded Niebauer rolled into the semifinals with a technical fall and major decision. He wrestles Philipsburg-Osceola returning state qualifier Caleb Hummel.
Clearfield leads the team race by one point over Bald Eagle Area, 104-103, coming into Saturday.
Bishop McCort, which has the most semifinalists with eight, is close behind in third with 100.5 points, while Chestnut Ridge (91) and Huntingdon (91) round out the top five.
