Melanie Jean (Wilson) Bittner

Feb. 16, 1963 – May 14, 2026

Melanie Jean (Wilson) Bittner, 63, of Frederick, Md., formerly of Altoona, passed away Thursday after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Altoona, the beloved daughter of George Wilson and the late Sandra Detwiler.

She is survived by her father, George Wilson; stepmother, Patty; and brothers, Mark Wilson (Amy) and Wade Kagarise; and her beloved husband of nearly 45 years, Ken Bittner.

She was preceded in death by her infant son, Justin; her mother, Sandra Detwiler; and stepfather, Calvin “Bud” Detwiler.

Melanie and Ken were married on Aug. 1, 1981. Together, they built a life filled with joy, adventure and simple pleasures.

A dedicated Pittsburgh Steelers fan, she rarely missed a game and proudly cheered on the black and gold. She loved the thrill of competition and spent many evenings playing Texas Hold’em/Poker with her friends. Melanie also had a passion for the outdoors, whether tearing up trails on ATV excursions or spending weekends at dirt track stock car and modified races. She cherished days at the beach, especially in Ocean City, Md., where she could relax and soak up the sun. Above all, Melanie was an animal lover. Her faithful dog Lily (named after her grandmother) held a special place in her heart. She also welcomed many beloved cats into her home.

Melanie will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, her love of fun and friendly competition and the warmth she brought to those around her.
