Lawson, Williams on top at Sylvan Hills Golf Club

HOLLIDAYSBURG — Cliff Lawson and Tim Williams are in first place after week one action of the Sylvan Hills Golf League at the Sylvan Hills Golf Course.

Curt Melton was the low gross winner (40) while Kevin Fuller, Andy French and Chris Seymour were the low net winner (35).

Closest-to-the-pin honors went to Michael Clawson and Greg Shedd, while Melton was the individual hole winner.

In ladies action, the team of Dayonne Beck, Connie Angeski, Doe Bolger and Linda Wise shot a 98 to win the Cha-Cha-Cha Tournament held by the Sylvan Hills Ladies Golf Association.

Finishing second was the team of Cathy Knisely, Bonnie Deem, Sandy Murphy and Joan Conway (99).

In Butch Focht Senior Men’s Tournament action, the team of Jim Burke, Dave Biseli, Herb Bolger and Kevin Davis won with a 34. Placing second at 35 was the team of Terry Goldstein, Gary Zimmerman, Rodger Fair and David Johns.

Summit

CRESSON — Jim Smith and Bob Whiteman shot a 65 as a net score to win the Summit Country Club two-player better ball tournament.

Jacob and Dan Martynuska were second with a 66.

Brady Eckenrode, Brandt Hite and Jacob Shuagis won skill prizes, and Tom Plunkett and Denny Storm won skins.

Windber

SALIX — Bill Schrimpf made a hole-in-one on the 147-yard No. 5 at Windber Country Club with a 6-hybrid.

The shot was witnessed by Louis Gjurich, Irv Meredith and Ed Demartino.

Huntingdon CC

HUNTINGDON — During week 3 action in the Big Orange Golf League at the Huntingdon Country Club, Ed Gargula-Geoff Clarke, along with Phil Thompson-Larry Newton, went 2-1 in league play.

The teams of Alan Herbster-Keith Black, and Bob Lamey-Gerry Huggler, both went 1-2.

Lamey was the low gross winner (39) while Thompson was the low net winner (34). The shot of the day was Black’s 45-foot chip shot for par hole on No. 13.

The sub for the day was Joe Masciangelo for Herbster.

PSU benefit

UNIVERSITY PARK — The 29th-annual Coaches vs. Cancer of Penn State Golf Tournament, hosted by Nittany Lion basketball head coach Mike Rhoades, will be held Friday, May 29, at the Penn State Golf Courses.

Through this tournament, as well as other annual events and partnerships, Coaches vs. Cancer of Penn State raises funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society to support cancer research and mission programs in our local community.

The event will welcome over 425 golfers, sponsors and regional sports luminaries to the Penn State Golf Courses.

The five-player, 18-hole scramble tournament is just one of the activities held Thursday-Friday, May 28-29. On May 28, the night before the golf tournament, CVC presents a Sponsors/Captain Reception at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. An awards dinner follows at the Hawbaker Pavilion at the Penn State Golf Course. An online auction will feature a number of exclusive items and experiences with all proceeds benefiting CVC-Penn State.

The golf tournament on Friday will feature the Penn State men’s basketball coaching staff and other current and former Penn State head coaches, athletes, department leaders and special guests.
