TYRONE — After battling back and forth over the final two days, the Bedford team of Adam Ritchey and Josh Leibfreid finally scored a one-shot victory over Todd Homan and Sean Brannan as darkness settled over the Sinking Valley course on Sunday evening.
Several rain delays during the final round led the two-man best-ball tournament to shorten play to 17 holes for the championship flight (all other flights were able to complete 18 holes on Sunday), and when Homan’s birdie attempt slid past the cup on the par-5 17th, Ritchey was able to tap in his par putt to secure the victory.
“It was a real battle today,” Ritchey said. “Todd and Sean are great competitors, and we had to play great today to come out on top.”
Ritchey and Leibfreid took a two-shot lead into the back-nine, and it remained that way until Brannan curled in a 12-foot, downhill birdie putt on the 13th. Ritchey answered with a 6-footer of his own for a birdie on the 14th, but real fireworks began on the club’s 15th hole. After leaving his approach shot short, Homan stepped up and calmly holed his 50-yard shot from the fairway for birdie. Undaunted, Leibfreid matched the Homan birdie with a pressure-packed 5-foot putt to maintain a two-shot lead.
After bogeying the 16th, Ritchey and Leibfreid came to the 17th, one shot clear and with daylight fading fast. Playing in near darkness, both teams parred the hole, securing a victory for Ritchey and Leibfreid.
“Playing in dark conditions like that can be really challenging,” Leibfreid said. “I always tell the students in my clinics to just trust the work they’ve done and make good swings. Today, I kept reminding myself to do the same.”
This was the first victory for Ritchey and Leibfreid as teammates.
“Playing with Josh was great. It was so enjoyable to win this with a guy like him,” Ritchey said. “I started playing in tournaments like this with my dad 24 years ago, when I was 16. To finally win a big one really means a lot.”
Tournament notes: Sinking Valley head pro Troy Monahan worked hard to manage a tournament that suffered through an extended fog delay Saturday morning and several rain delays on Sunday… During Saturday’s second round, Iron Masters’ Mase McCreary scored a hole-in-one on the par-3 16th only to be matched by Adam Ritchey about two hours later……Saint Francis alum John Handrigan teamed with JP Stultz again this year and the teammates recorded another respectable finish (Handrigan is the head coach for the Notre Dame golf team).
