State College boys tennis team too much for Hollidaysburg

STATE COLLEGE — Hollidaysburg earned a hard-fought win over Altoona on Tuesday to play unbeaten State College in the District 6 Class 3A team tennis championship.

Unfortunately, the Little Lions proved to be too much for the Golden Tigers as State College claimed the crown with a 5-0 victory on Wednesday afternoon.

“There’s a reason State College is undefeated, hasn’t give up a point all year, and is one of the best teams in the state,” Hollidaysburg coach Brian Denis said. “All seven of their players are tremendously talented and take tennis very seriously year-round.”

Mark Sandow, William Liu and Jude Cessna claimed singles victories, while the State teams of Peter Novikov-Ishan Sharma and Evan Zhang-Dash Nealon came out in front in doubles action.

“We (Hollidaysburg) battled hard and had a lot of competitive points but they (State College) were just too good today,” Denis said. “We have a chance to finish our season with a win in the Laurel Highlands championship Friday against Westmont-(Hilltop), so we have to get regrouped for that.”

Hollidaysburg’s record fell to 15-3, while State College improved to 16-0.
