Tiger tennis suffers first losses of season

Altoona and Hollidaysburg both competed at the second weekend of the Mountain Lion Invitational which had to be moved indoors to the Gorilla House Gym and Summit facilities because of the weather on Friday afternoon in high school boys tennis action.

While both teams suffered losses in their respective semifinal matches, the Mountain Lions claimed third place with a 4-1 win over the Golden Tigers in the consolation match.

Altoona dropped a 5-0 decision to Mount Lebanon in its semifinal match, while Hollidaysburg lost 5-0 to Dallastown.

In the consy match, Luke Mitchell, Dylan Batrus and Owen Wasovich earned wins in singles action for the Mountain Lions, while the No. 1 doubles team of Aiden Aiken and Avery Lanzendorfer came out on top.

For the Tigers, the No. 2. doubles team of Amir Azad and Jacob Sidney were triumphant.

Dallastown beat Mount Lebanon, 5-0, for the title.

Altoona improved to 9-4 while Hollidaysburg lost for the first time this season, falling to 8-2.

Bulldogs defeated

MCCONNELLSBURG — Claysburg-Kimmel suffered its second loss of the season by falling behind to McConnellsburg early and not being able to recover in a 7-2 loss in high school baseball.

Landon Douglas belted a solo home run in the top of the second for the Bulldogs, while Gavin Treon, who finished with two hits on the afternoon, singled to left field to chase Porter Weise home in the third.

The Spartans put up three runs in the bottom of the first, and then tacked on four more in the fourth to seal the victory.

SOFTBALL

C-K cruises to win

MCCONNELLSBURG — Claysburg-Kimmel made quick work of McConnellsburg by scoring nine runs in the first and third innings en route to an 18-0, three-inning victory in high school softball.

Isabella Paris smacked three hits, including a double, while leading the Lady Bulldogs with four RBIs, Bella Francona collected three hits, including a double and solo homer, and winning pitcher Launa Musselman helped her own cause by driving in three runs on three hits.

McKenna Black, Jaylee Swindell and Zakera Bush came through with two RBIs apiece for C-K, which remained unbeaten through seven games.

Glendale shut out

DUBOIS — Glendale managed just one hit in a 3-0 loss at DuBois Central Catholic in softball play.

Macy Snyder delivered the Lady Vikings only hit when she tripled in the top of the seventh inning.

Rylee Kulbatsky earned the victory for the Cardinals by striking out 21 Glendale batters and walking just one in a complete game effort.

Kling helps PSU win

UNIVERSITY PARK — The Penn State baseball team came out on top, 3-1, in Friday’s series opener against USC at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Ryan DeSanto tossed seven strong innings before the Nittany Lions took the lead in the eighth. Paxton Kling tied the game at 1-1 with a solo homer in the seventh.

Penn State moved to 22-10 overall (10-6 Big Ten), while USC dropped to 21-12 overall (9-7 Big Ten).

Penn State recorded three runs on three hits and five walks. Kling launched his 12th homer of the year, a solo shot, and added an RBI on a sac fly. Jesse Jaconski contributed two hits.
