Altoona duo win on opening night

HERSHEY — Altoona No. 2 seeds Braiden Weaver and Luke Sipes did what was expected of them in their first-round bouts of the PIAA Class 3A Championships on Thursday night at the Giant Center.

The one fly in the ointment, though, is that Sipes is battling some adversity with a respiratory illness.

While Weaver rolled to a 15-0 technical fall over Whitehall’s Kade Pascoe in 2:27 at 121 pounds, Sipes scored eight points in the final 1:10 to secure a 12-3 major decision over Neshaminy’s Beknazar Baiyshbekov at 160.

Tyrone’s Kyle Scott was dominant in the first bout of his third Class 2A state tournament, rolling to a 19-3 technical fall over Reynolds’ Emery Johnson.

Altoona’s Deklan Barr (127) and Gavin Ciampoli (139) are still alive in the consolations after winning their preliminary bouts and losing in the first round.

“Overall, it was a good day,” Altoona coach Joel Gilbert said. “We were 4-2 as a team, and when you’re 4-2 and on the positive side at the state tournament, that’s always a good day down here.”

Northern Bedford’s Wyatt Clouse (127) and Central Cambria’s Jake Wilson (145) are still alive in the Class 2A consolations.

Central Cambria’s Burke Niebauer (127) and Marshall Eckenrode (160) were eliminated after going 0-2.

Weaver took Pascoe down 5 seconds into the bout. From there, he put Pascoe on his back three times – all resulting in four nearfall points.

“He looked really good out there,” Gilbert said. “He went after it. I think he’s excited for the tournament. The past two weekends, he’s just looked super in all positions. If he gets on top of you, he can rack up some points. I think that kid curled up in a ball, and he still ended up getting him over on his back.”

Weaver will wrestle Gettysburg’s William Yordy (41-11), who was a 4-2 winner over Councill Rock North’s Marco Loss.

“He’s going to be hard to beat in this tournament,” Gilbert said. “There’s no doubt about that. As this tournament goes on, I think he’s going to get tougher yet.”

Baiyshbekov scored the first points when he took Sipes down with 57 seconds left in the first period. Sipes quickly escaped and got a takedown with 14 seconds remaining in the period for a 4-3 lead.

Sipes was up 5-3 in the third when Baiyshbekov had to take a timeout for catching a finger in his eye. Not long after they resumed wrestling, SIpes took him down with 1:10 left, lifted his opponent and put him on his back for four nearfall points.

He ran a half nelson and scored four more back points at the edge of the mat as time expired.

“I got sick like two days ago,” Sipes said sitting on the floor and leaning against a wall outside the gym floor. “I got a little bit better yesterday, a little bit better today, but I’m still feeling it. That’s all right though. I’m pushing through.

“Obviously I want to score points and blow it open in every match, but sometimes whenever you’re feeling like this it’s not always going to be perfect or pretty. Here you’ve just got to get it done.”

Gilbert said Sipes did what he had to do to get the win.

“Sometimes when you’re a little under the weather like that, you have to change your gameplan on how you wrestle,” he said. “Sometimes you’re fighting some things that are against you. It’s a shame that it’s his senior year, but that’s the part of coming down here.

“You have to learn to adapt and overcome these things and continue to wrestle at your best. The goal was to score points, get better and advance, and that’s what he did today.”

Sipes (40-4) will wrestle West Chester Rustin’s A.J. Corp (32-5), a 5-4 winner over Emmaus’ Jesse Scot, in the quarterfinals.

“It’s the same gameplan as always — score points and get better,” Sipes said. “I’m going to try to match levels a little bit better and not blow my lungs out so quick, but I’ll be ready to go. I’m excited.”

The quarterfinals are set for 2:15 p.m. today, with two consolations rounds to follow. The semifinals are at 7 p.m. Friday, and the fourth round of consys will follow.

Scott piled up the points in the first period against Johnson, recording two takedowns and a two-point nearfall for an 8-1 lead. In the second, Scott had two more takedowns and a three-point nearfall en route off the tilt to get the technical fall.

“That’s my first bonus point match at states,” Scott said, “so that’s great.”

“We’re excited to get that match in,” Tyrone coach Quentin Wright said. “He wrestled solid, and we’re just going to take it one match at a time. Kyle did what he needed to do out there. He kept scoring points.”

Scott will wrestle Warrior Run’s Tyler Ulrich in the quarterfinals. If he beats Ulrich, also a technical fall winner, Scott will likely get Faith Christian Academy’s two-time state champion Adam Waters. Waters wrestles Bishop McCort’s C.J. Pensiero in the quarterfinals.

“I’m excited,” Scott said. “If I win that match, I get Waters most likely, so it should be fun.”

The Class 2A quarterfinals and second round of consolations are set for 8 a.m. on Friday. The third round of consys will follow at 10:30 a.m. The semifinals are at 7 p.m., and the fourth round of consolations will follow at 9.

Barr used an elevator to put Nazareth’s Cooper Wenrich on his back and pin him in 1:42 in his preliminary bout.

“It’s good to get off the mat quick,” Barr sad. “You can rehydrate and get ready for the next one.”

Barr suffered a 1-0 heartbreaking loss to Cedar Cliff’s Aiden Herndon in the first round. Barr attempted multiple rolls in the third period in an attempt to escape, and he was near a reversal as time expired.

Barr will wrestle Downingtown West’s Chase Sigle in his second-round consolation bout.

Ciampoli was leading 4-0 when he pinned Unionville’s Cole Haines in 3:24 in his opener.

“It’s definitely good to get the first one out of the way,” Ciampoli said.

He then ran into Nazareth’s returning state champ Tahir Parkins (47-0), who won by an 18-3 technical fall in 2:17.

Ciampoli (34-12) will wrestle a quarterfinal loser in the second round of consolations.

Wilson opened with a 4-0 win over Greenville’s Josh Perrino in the preliminaries, but then he suffered a 10-5 loss to Midd-West’s Matthew Smith in the first round. Wilson wrestles Bishop McDevitt’s Easton Comp in the second round of consolations.

Clouse lost by technical fall, 17-0, to St. Marys’ Aiden Beimel, but he rebounded with a 3-1 win over Hickory’s Brady Slicker in the consolations.

Clouse scored two nearfall points in the second and escaped in the third. It was a little hairy for Clouse the last 30 or so seconds of the bout as he defended a Slicker takedown attempt.

“There at the end, he showed a lot of heart and grit with keeping that whizzer in and fending off that takedown,”‘ Northern Bedford coach Brian Dutchcot said. “It was good for him to get that win.”

Clouse has a tough second-round consolation draw in Penns Valley’s Southwest Regional champion Erik Carlile.
