Avery Wright of Tyrone recently earned national recognition after winning Champion in her class and securing the national title at the 2026 Interscholastic Equestrian Association National Finals.
The event was held at the National Equestrian Center in St. Louis, Missouri on April 25.
Wright competed in the Future Beginner Walk, Trot and Canter Dressage Seat Equitation division, where she faced 11 other top riders from across the United States These riders represent the highest level of competition in their division, as only the top two riders per zone and per class qualify for nationals. With six dressage zones nationwide, each class brings together just 12 riders — placing competitors among the top 1-2% of approximately 12,000 IEA riders across the country.
Wright qualified for Nationals as an individual rider at regionals held at Delaware Valley University earlier this year, where she earned Reserve Champion (second place) in her class, securing her position among the nation’s elite competitors. IEA Dressage Seat Equitation riders are judged on precision, control, and form, including correct rider position, effective use of aids, and the ability to maintain a balanced, harmonious performance.
A defining element of IEA competition is that riders are assigned a horse at random and meet their mount only minutes before entering the arena. Wright drew a horse named Regal from Ohio and had approximately 10 minutes to prepare before her ride, demonstrating adaptability, confidence, and skill at the highest level of competition.
