Vescovi’s offense paces Zimmerman
Zimmerman Excavating & Landscaping’s Isaac Vescovi had a lot of hardware to take home on Thursday night following the Central Blair Recreation Commission Lakemont Park Summer League Division 1 championship.
First off, thanks to the Cambria Heights graduate’s offensive efforts — scoring a game-high 29 points –Zimmerman won in convincing fashion 57-41 against Spherion. That gave them back-to-back championships over the same team they defeated on this same stage a year ago.
He ended the night winning both the Stu Nolan League and Dick Hankinson Championship Game MVP Awards. Vescovi also made the 2022 All League Team.
“It was a great end of summer,” Vescovi said of his big night.
Spherion’s Kyle Ruggery says he enjoys the chances he gets to compete against him every summer.
“He’s a great player,” he said. “I love playing against him; he challenges us every year, and shows up to play every time.”
Zimmerman used a balance scoring attack led by its size as Vescovi scored 11 of his first-half points. Imil Britt later added a pair of 3-pointers to jump out to a 31-18 lead at the break.
“They’re quicker than us at almost every position, so we had to use our height as our advantage,” Vescovi said.
Ruggery felt that Zimmerman’s speed was a big challenge for his squad who was missing two of their big men.
“That was a little issue, (we) could’ve used some size, but they played zone, clogged it up,” he said. “Made us shoot from the outside, Lakemont’s not the best place to shoot, but hey that’s the game.”
Jackson Byer did help get the deficit down to nine after a steal which he converted on a fast break, but that’s as close Spherion got. Byer led Spherion with 14 points.
Vescovi scored 18 more – burying a pair of three-pointers – to help put the game away. He felt a change in defensive scheme went a long way in helping them decide this game.
“The first two times we played a 3-2 zone, tonight we played a 2-3,” he said. I think we played better team defense tonight because we switched up our defense.”
Joining Vescovi on the All League Team were Nick Rigby (Spherion) Drew Charlton (Mike’s Court), Drew Shubick (Hoopsfest), Landon DeHaas (Martin Oil) and Joziah Taylor (Stop Cryin & Work).
