Nancy Anne (Hughes) Smith, 87, formerly of Altoona, passed away at her home in Raleigh, N.C., May 28, 2026. She was born in Cresson, to Donald and Teresa (Callan) Hughes.
Nancy retired from Penn State University in 2004.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul J. Smith; her son, Stephen P. Lockard Jr.; and five sisters.
Surviving are her daughters: Susan M. Garges (Dale) of West End, N.C., Ellen J. Satterfield of Raleigh, N.C., and Cynthia A. Benning (Stephen) of Albuquerque, N.M.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Louise Deffenbaugh of Pasadena, Calif.
Nancy’s family held a Celebration of Life at her home in Raleigh, N.C., on June 6, 2026.
She will be greatly missed.
