Garrity is the best choice for governor

We live in a culture that reduces complex issues to sound bites and memes, but Pennsylvania’s challenges demand real work. Stacy Garrity has a proven record of protecting Pennsylvanians and tackling tough issues with honesty and determination. She stands firm for what is best for our commonwealth, while our current governor shifts positions with the political winds. Garrity will continue defending our children and our elderly. She will work to make Pennsylvania a national leader in energy and economic growth. While the current administration faces accusations of fraud and abuse of ...

McCoy believes in Constitution

I urge voters in the 79th District of Pennsylvania to vote for Caleb McCoy (D) on Nov. 3 to represent our community in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He believes in the United States Constitution and the rule of law. Caleb understands the plight of working families who struggle to make ends meet and will work to lower costs for families, make childcare more affordable, decrease utility bills, keep rural hospitals open, and create educational opportunities for high school graduates. Caleb McCoy will stand up for the people of our Commonwealth in matters of affordability ...

Mall land offers many use options

It will be a boost of great potential if the Altoona-Blair County Development Corporation is successful in “constructing” the foundation for purchase of the Logan Valley Mall by an apparently yet-to-be-finalized investor group. If all of the pieces of the purchase puzzle come together, as envisioned, the road presumably will be paved for revitalization of the mall property as a major, proud element of the area economy once again — even if not entirely retail-based. It has been troubling to witness the deterioration that the mall has experienced in recent years. Hopefully, the ...

Personal-use AR-15s should not be allowed

As a commissioned military officer, I trained soldiers in the use of the AR-15 assault rifle (variation of the M16A1). Invented 1950, it was designed strictly for combat and was used extensively in Vietnam. The rifle has a flash suppressor to avoid detection from the barrel flash. It uses ammunition magazines that hold 20 and 30 rounds. It has a forward assist to load any rounds that fail to load automatically. The AR-15 uses a 5.56 cal round, 5.7 centimeters long, and holds twice the amount of gunpowder of a .38 cal. pistol. The result is a deadlier projectile that is made to tumble ...

Garrity’s policies address deficit

The only way Pennsylvania will effectively tackle its structural deficit is to “outgrow the bear”. Stacy Garrity, State Treasurer and Republican candidate for governor understands this and she brings years of proven leadership experience in private industry, on the battlefield and in state government to the challenge. Unleashing Pennsylvania’s energy potential is a foundational first step. Garrity promises to set policy priorities that will eliminate outdated regulations, lift restrictions on new drilling and accelerate permits to build more generation capacity. Governor ...

Joyce's voting record questioned

Physicians take a Hippocratic Oath, named for the Greek physician Hippocrates, known as “The Father of Medicine.” Included in its promises is this: “I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person's family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick.” I wonder if Rep. John Joyce, M.D., remembers this promise. If he felt any responsibility for the sick or their families or their economic stability, he would not have voted ...
