Physicians take a Hippocratic Oath, named for the Greek physician Hippocrates, known as "The Father of Medicine."
Included in its promises is this:
"I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person’s family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick."
I wonder if Rep. John Joyce, M.D., remembers this promise.
If he felt any responsibility for the sick or their families or their economic stability, he would not have voted to take SNAP benefits and Medicaid coverage from working people (emphasis on "working" for those who think all that money goes to "welfare bums"), and to price Affordable Care Act insurance out of their reach.
Because of his actions, our family members, friends and neighbors are losing healthcare coverage, healthcare services, their health, their livelihoods and their lives.
That is happening while, as a member of Congress, he can buy coverage under the same Affordable Care Act and have our tax dollars pay 75 percent of the premium. Keep in mind, he is one of the wealthiest federal lawmakers from Pennsylvania, worth from $14 million to $17 million.
Maybe he thought he was taking the "Hypocritical Oath."
