Dutch’s customers have recycling options

Altoona, Logan Township and Hollidaysburg customers of the trash hauler who recently stopped picking up recyclables have at least three options for continuing to comply with recycling rules in those municipalities — while also continuing to stick with their hauler.

Two of the options for Dutch’s Hauling customers are free, although they require customers to transport their items — while the third will require both payment and transport.

Dutch’s recently announced that it had stopped recycling, due to cost and alleged “harassment” by the education and enforcement officer of the Intermunicipal Relations Committee, which operates the recycling program in the three municipalities — all of which are required by state law to have curbside recycling programs.

Suspension of recycling pickup violates ordinances in the three municipalities, making Dutch’s liable for citations and fines.

But by not recycling, he’s saving $10,000 a month, owner Dutch Fornari has said.

When he was recycling, the officer followed his trucks relentlessly, “mile after mile,” looking for instances in which his workers didn’t deal with the recyclables they found in customers’ bins properly, he said.

In many cases, customers contaminate the bins with trash, according to Fornari.

One free option for Dutch’s customers is to take recyclables to the IRC’s Buckhorn Recycling and Compost Facility, 1860 Black Snake Road, Dysart (or Ashville), according to IRC Executive Director Brock Bryan.

Recyclables must be dropped off while the facility is open for business.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call 814-941-6675.

Another free option for homeowners is Burgmeier’s Hauling, 1356 Old Sixth Avenue Road, Altoona, according to Bryan.

The company’s transfer station, which includes a recycling drop-off center, accepts most common recyclables, including Nos. 1 and 2 plastics, clear and colored glass, tin, aluminum, newspaper, office paper, cardboard and more, according to Burgmeier’s website. The transfer station is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday and 6 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Call Burgmeier’s at 814-943-8975 ext. 2320 for more information.

The third option is the IRC’s Duncansville Recycling and Compost Facility, 16906 Dunnings Highway/Old Route 220, just south of Inlows.

It’s accessible for recyclable drop-off at any time, but only to holders of a keycard. Keycards are $30 for a year’s access, Bryan said. At one time, access was only for residents of the three IRC municipalities, but as of several years ago, anyone can obtain one, Bryan said. His predecessor “didn’t want to exclude anyone willing to recycle,” Bryan said. Keycards are available for sale at the facility from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesdays. More information is available at 814-942-7472.
