Mount Aloysius College students volunteer at dental clinic

PITTSBURGH — Mount Aloysius College pre-dental students showed off their skills and their commitment to the college’s Mercy values through volunteering at a free dental clinic in late October.

The clinic, Mission of Mercy Pittsburgh, serves underinsured individuals in the Pittsburgh area.

Katie Fasel of Bedford and Ally Bihary of Duncansville, two pre-dental majors at the college, worked alongside 1,000 other volunteers to provide care to more than 1,000 patients. The group provided extractions, root canals, fillings and examinations. Bihary worked with other hygienists to offer routine cleanings, while Fasel assisted dentists in the periodontal and imaging department.

“I’m so proud of these ladies and the service work they’ve done,” said Dr. Merrilee Anderson, professor of science and mathematics at Mount Aloysius. “The Mercy values–service, justice, mercy, and hospitality–are alive and well in Katie and Ally’s work.”

Next year, Katie, Ally and the Mount’s pre-dental club hope to return to Mission of Mercy Pittsburgh with even more volunteers.
