50 years ago: June 29, 1976

The state Department of Public Welfare, Ford S. Thompson deputy secretary, announced that the Hollidaysburg State Hospital would be phased out over the next year. Patients there that were deemed to be “too fragile” would not be moved.

25 years ago: June 29, 2001

Norfolk Southern Railroad, which wanted to close the Hollidaysburg shops, suggested the employees there get together to create ownership of the shops through a stock ownership plan.

10 years ago: June 29, 2016

A bridge along Cooney Road in Cambria County was named for PFC Thomas A. Cooney, killed in action in WWII, and a bridge along Tower Road in Cambria County was named for Herbert A. Wirfel, a PA state trooper killed on duty.
