Civil War weekend planned

The Bellefonte Historical and Cultural Association will host its second annual Civil War weekend May 1-3 at various locations around Bellefonte. The event will include lectures by 10 scholars, guided tours of the Union Cemetery, a large sale of Civil War books, an encampment of Civil War reenactors, a dramatic presentation of a powerful article written by Frederick Douglas urging Congress to give Black men the vote, a book exhibit, a Civil War memorabilia exhibit at the Historical Museum and an interfaith religious service.

All programs, demonstrations and exhibits are free.

The primary venues are the American Philatelic Society, the Bellefonte Waterfront, the Union Cemetery and St. John’s Episcopal Church.

The weekend begins at 1 p.m. Friday. Events include two lectures, a 6 p.m. cemetery tour and a 6 p.m. presentation of the Frederick Douglas article.

On Saturday there will be two simultaneous daylong tracks of talks and the book sale at the American Philatelic Society, the opening of the encampment (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.), a cemetery tour and re-creation of Lincoln’s speech at 6 p.m.

On Sunday, the encampment will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and a cemetery tour will be held at 3 p.m. An interfaith Abrahamic Endorsement of Peace service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 2 p.m.
