Churches plan Palm Sunday, Holy Week services

Christ Community, Llyswen UMC

Holy Week will be celebrated at Christ Community and Llyswen United Methodist churches.

Monday and Tuesday, April 14-15, there will be self-guided prayer stations at Christ Community UMC, 5715 Roselawn Ave., Altoona. The times are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. both days. Maundy Thursday service will be held at 7 p.m. April 17 at Christ Community, while the Good Friday service is 7 p.m. April 18 at Llyswen UMC, 308 Coleridge Ave., Altoona.

An Easter egg hunt will be held at 10 a.m. April 19 at Christ Community UMC. Those attending should bring their own basket. There will be snacks and crafts for all ages after the egg hunt.

Geeseytown-Newry Lutheran

Geeseytown-Newry Lutheran Parish will host Maundy Thursday worship at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17, at Geeseytown Lutheran Church, 462 Route 22, Hollidaysburg, and Good Friday services at Noon Friday, April 18, at Newry Lutheran Church, 1030 Shamrock Lane, Newry, and 6:30 p.m. at Geeseytown Lutheran Church. Easter Sunday Worship will begin with a Sunrise Service with Holy Communion at Geeseytown Lutheran Church at 6:30 a.m. followed by breakfast, and Easter morning worship with Holy Communion at 9 a.m. at Newry Lutheran Church.

The Geeseytown-Newry Lutheran Parish is a member of the Allegheny Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

Juniata, Greenwood, Wehnwood

Palm Sunday services will be held at 9 and 11 a.m. at Juniata United Methodist Church, 808 N. Fourth St., Altoona.

A Maundy Thursday service will be held at 4 p.m. April 17 at Juniata United Methodist Church and at 7 p.m. at the Greenwood United Methodist Church.

The Good Friday, April 18, Crosswalk will begin at 6:30 a.m. at the Juniata United Methodist Church. Breakfast will be served after the walk at the Wehnwood United Methodist Church, followed by an 8:30 a.m. service with LuAnne Baker portraying Mary, Mother of Jesus. Services will also be held at 7 p.m. at the Jaggard UMC. Holy Saturday prayer services will be held at 4 pm. April 19 at the Juniata UMC.

A Sunrise service will be held at 7 a.m. followed by an Easter breakfast at 8 a.m. at Juniata UMC. Easter services will be at 9 and 11 a.m. at Juniata UMC.

St. Mark’s Episcopal

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 335 Locust St., downtown Johnstown, will offer following worship services in-person and via Zoom during Holy Week and Easter Sunday, April 13-20.

Services include 11:30 a.m. Palm Sunday, with holy eucharist Rite II, liturgy of the palms and reading of the Passion; 6 p.m. Monday, litany of penance and evening prayer rite II;; 6 p.m. Tuesday, healing service and compline; 6 p.m. Wednesday, holy eucharist rite I; 6 p.m. Maundy Thursday, holy eucharist with foot washing and stripping of the altar; noon Good Friday, liturgy and Stations of the Cross; 9 a.m. Holy Saturday liturgy; 11:30 a.m.

Easter Sunday holy Eucharist. In addition, a special slideshow with music “The Way of the Cross (Stations of the Cross)” that was developed by parishioners is available 24/7 on the church’s website page saintmarksjohnstown.com/the-way-of-the-cross-stations-of-the-cross/.

Duncansville Lutheran

Duncansville Lutheran will hold services on Palm Sunday at 8 and 10 a.m. followed by Motivation Mug at 11:15 a.m.

The church will hold a dinner at 6 p.m. Maundy Thursday, April 17, in the social hall. A Good Friday service will be held at 6 p.m. On Easter Sunday, April 20, services will be held at 8 and 10 a.m.

Wehnwood UMC

A Sunrise service will be held at 7 a.m. April 20 at Wehnwood United Methodist Church, followed by the 10 a.m. Easter service with the Rev. Randy Willis.

28th Street COB

Twenty-eighth Street Church of the Brethren will celebrate Palm Sunday with the laying of the palms, a baptism and bread and cup communion. The worship service begins at 10:30 a.m. April 13. The church is at 28th Street and Union Avenue, Altoona.

Juniata COB

Easter services will be held at Juniata Church of the Brethren, North Ninth Avenue and Third Street, beginning with a 7:30 a.m. Sunrise service with guest speaker the Rev. Larry Weaver and music by Donna Huber and Esther Wharton. Breakfast will be served after the service. The 9:30 a.m. Sunday school hour for all ages will focus on Jesus’ parable of Jule 14:15-24. The theme for the 10:30 a.m. worship service is “Provocative Reflections on the Christ, the Cross and the Resurrection in Music and Word.” Soloist Nancy Robinson will present “An Easter Alleluia,” with narrators Leonard Alwine and Howard Ermin. The Rev. Robert Wharton will speak on “Easter in Isaiah” based on the Old Testament, Isaiah 53.

First UMC, Hollidaysburg

On Palm Sunday, April 13, the children of First United Methodist Church in Hollidaysburg will present a pageant of singing and dancing. “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” will be staged at 9:30 and 11 a.m. There will be no 8 a.m. service this week. There will be an Easter Egg Hunt for all the children in attendance that day between the 9:30 and 11 a.m. services.

On April 17, Maundy Thursday, a 7 p.m. service will include communion and music by the choir.

On Good Friday, April 18, the Hollidaysburg Ministerium Good Friday Lenten Lunch, hosted by First United Methodist Church, will be held at noon, followed by a Good Friday service.

The Chancel Choir will present the cantata “Return to Me” at 7 p.m. Good Friday.

The church will hold a 6:30 a.m. Easter sunrise service in the Prayer Garden that will proceed into the sanctuary and be followed by the 8 a.m. blended worship, 9:30 a.m. contemporary service with praise band and the 11 a.m. traditional service with the chancel choir.

Faith United Church of Christ

Worship on Palm/Passion Sunday at Faith United Church of Christ, 711 Seventh Ave., Altoona, will begin at 10:45 a.m. April 13. The service includes remembering Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into the Holy City of Jerusalem and reading portions of the Passion narrative according to St. Luke. The choir will sing. The Pastor is the Rev. John L. Emig.

The church will hold a Maundy Thursday service at 7 p.m. April 17 recalling the washing of the disciples’ feet, celebrating the Lord’s Supper in the Upper Room and departing in silence.

Good Friday worship will be at 7 p.m. and will include the Passion narrative according to St. John. “The Innkeeper’s Wife” will be performed by Janis Lonsinger.

Easter Sunday worship begins at 10:45 a.m.

Duncansville Evangelical

Duncansville Evangelical Lutheran Church has announced its Holy Week schedule. On Palm Sunday there will be a traditional 8 a.m. service and 10 a.m. contemporary service in the Nave.

Maundy Thursday dinner will be at 6 p.m. in the social hall, reflecting Jesus’ Last Supper and the commandment to love and serve one another.

A Good Friday service will be held at 6 p.m. in the Nave, reflecting on Christ’s sacrifice. From 1 to 4 p.m., children will participate in Good Friday activities, including a craft, scavenger hunt and an Easter Egg hunt.

Easter Sunday will include an 8 a.m. traditional service and a 10 a.m. contemporary service.
